Amberyl's Almost-Complete List of MUSHes
This is my personal list of MUSHes, together with
addresses, commentary, links to home pages, and, if available,
MudWHO queries. It
is, hopefully, useful, up-to-date, and nearly-complete, although not entirely
objective. It's in alphabetical order, and should be fairly complete.
http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~lwl/muds.html (World Wide Web Directory, 06/1995)
If you find this list overly long, you can go back to its
index page, which links to this full
document by section.
I've also started working on a new experimental Automated
MUSH List, which automatically updates the statuses of MUSHes once per
hour, providing an up-to-date status listing of all MUSHes listed in this
document.
MUDs which are, to my knowledge, permanently down, are moved to the
Defunct MUSH List. Therefore, everything in this
file should be relatively current.
More information about MUDs in general can be found here.
These MUD pages have gotten quite long recently; I've started a
Recent Changes file for the updates.

Entry Formats
The entries are displayed in list format. Before
the MUSH's name will be a list bullet, color-coded by type (if your WWW
browser can display pictures), or a two-letter key code. If
MudWHO data for
that MUSH is available, you can click on the bullet/key in order to get
the listing. Clicking on the MUSH's name will connect you to that MUSH.
The date of that entry's addition to this list is noted at the beginning
of the MUD's description; for recent data on MUSH statuses, check the
Automated MUSH List.
Key/Color Codes
- Social MUSH.
- Socializing, building, programming, and general goofing off.
- Book-based MUSH.
- Roleplaying and simulation emphasized in a game which attempts to
re-create the society and world of a novel or other media source. The social
aspects of roleplaying are emphasized over conflict-driven stories.
- Themed MUSH.
- A themed MUSH with roleplaying and a relaxed atmosphere. Socializing,
building, and programming are frequently popular, as well. (These are
distinguished from "book-based MUSHes" by being based on an "original"
theme, and/or having a less structured roleplaying environment.)
- Pern-themed MUSH.
- These games are based on the Dragonriders of Pern novels by
Anne McCaffrey. They are, for the most part, "slice of life" roleplaying,
with an emphasis on re-creating the society, and the building and programming
of objects to support a simulation of the world.
- Player-arbitrated MUSH.
- Roleplaying in a story-oriented environment emphasized. No use of
"judges", "Storytellers", or similar admin-appointed arbitrators, unless
requested. Possible use of an existing "face to face" RPG system.
- Judged or "dynamic" MUSH.
- Roleplaying in a conflict-oriented environment emphasized. "Judges" are
used to arbitrate conflicts. Administrators may intervene in the storyline.
No set game system.
- StoryTeller MUSH.
- Roleplaying in a White Wolf Games world, utilizing a StoryTeller
system.
- Educational/Professional MUSH.
- Directed towards serving as an educational or professional resource.
The List
-
- Acer Isle Virtual World: located at cave.pg.md.us 2222.
- (3/2/95) This is a roleplaying MUSH based upon an original
world called Norkind. It is intended to be a fully in-character game,
with an in-depth history. More information is available from its
FTP site. The game is
currently registration-only; send email to dgc@scs.unr.edu
with the subject "Registration", and a character name and temporary
password, in order to get a character.
- Altered Dimensions II: located at spruce.evansville.edu 6250.
- (9/26/94) A newly-opened and still very small MUSH. There is a
mailing list you can subscribe to by sending mail to
altered@maddog.evansville.edu; the list address itself is
altered-l@maddog.evansville.edu.
- Amarynth MUSH: located at pharos.acusd.edu 9999.
- A World of Darkness MUSH, based in the small New England town of New Hope,
Maine. This MUSH is still extremely small. Further information about it can
be found via its gopher.
- AmberMUSH: located at muds.okstate.edu 5150.
- Based on the world of Roger Zelazny's Amber
novels, and the Amber Diceless RPG from Phage Press. Its emphasis
is cooperative storytelling. Character registration is required, with
caladan@netcom.com. AmberMUSH has
an FTP site
(indexed by a
WWW Page),
which contains, among other things, the ASCII version of the
Player's
Guide (which is also available
in HTML format). Players may also find it
helpful to read the (incomplete) Shadow Guide.
Sorcerors might also want to look at the Sorcery Guide.
A reference for Chaos nomenclature can be found
in another FTP
directory provided by one of its players. You might also enjoy
the satires of Amber written by
various players. Finally, there is also
the DRPG FTP site.
- ApexMUSH: located at apex.ccs.yorku.ca 4201.
- A relatively small social/building MUSH.
- Belior Rising: located at brazil-nut.enmu.edu 4301.
- Another PernMUSH, this one only recently started. It is set in the Tenth
Pass, and is still very small. An email address is required when a character
is created. This MUSH has a home
page.
- Bloodletting: Dublin by Night: located at piaget.psych.mun.ca 4991.
- (10/18/94) Yes, it's one more StoryTeller MUSH. This one is
intended to focus on roleplay above statistics and rules, as well as
incorporating the forthcoming Changeling material from White Wolf. It is
intended to be a tinyplot-rich environment, particularly for mortal
characters, and it emphasizes a "realistic" approach to Dublin.
- Cajun Nights: located at krynn.solace.mh.se 7373.
- Another World of Darkness MUSH, this one based in New Orleans and Baton
Rouge, Louisiana. (Despite a last-valid-connect date of 1/5/95, as of
3/6/95 this MUSH will remain on the list, due to assertions that it is,
somewhere, still up.)
- Camelot MUSH: located at cadman.cit.buffalo.edu 5440.
- (8/23/94) A MUSH based on the King Arthur and the Knights of the
Round Table legends.
Character creation is open, but concepts must be registered via email to
amandafb@paun02.pa.msu.edu. The setting is primarily taken from
Mallory. This game is unrelated to the other Camelot MUSH.
- Castle D'Image: located at fogey.stanford.edu 5555.
- (3/2/95) On December 9th, 1994, an administrative schism on
ImageCastle MUSH resulted in a split of the two MUSHes. Castle d'Image was
begun, on the same machine, using the same database, as of the day of that
split. Essentially, both MUSHes are light-roleplaying and social MUSHes
within a medieval theme.
- CheersMUSH: located at poolsrv.clemson.edu 9999.
- Based on the TV show Cheers, although it has a more general
theme of "television". It's quite small and relatively empty. Performance is
noticeably degraded by use of several extremely computationally expensive
global commands; if you experience lag, this is likely the cause. This
MUSH seems to be permanently down, as of 11/1/94.
- Children of the Atom: located at bison.range.orst.edu 2099.
- (3/2/95) This MUSH, based upon the X-Men comic books, diverges
at the point of New Mutants #51, X-Factor #13, and Uncanny X-Men #214.
This is a roleplaying MUSH, and feature characters are available.
More information is available from its
FTP site.
- Children of the Fall: located at holly.ludd.luth.se 2222.
- Based on the ElfQuest comics of Wendy and Richard Pini, this
is set after Kings of the Broken Wheel. This game is still under
construction. This MUSH appears to be permanently down, as of 11/1/94.
- ChromeMUSH: located at colossus.acusd.edu 4444.
- (8/16/94) This is a cyberpunk MUSH which, despite not being based
upon the RPG Shadowrun, nonetheless takes much of its
terminology and background from FASA's pencil-and-paper game. It utilizes
judged roleplaying, and a policy of mailing summaries to the administrators;
The MUSH is brand-new and small; while some care seems to have been taken
to build an infrastructure in code, and thought seems to have been put into
the text files, it seems unlikely that the administrator group (which is not
listed in the news files) is terribly experienced. Nonetheless, the game's
core, thus far, seems solid. The setting is Sacramento, California, in the
year 2030.
- Citadel MUSH: located at ccnet.com 6250.
- One of the newer World of Darkness MUSHes, this one is set in San
Francisco. It utilizes rules from Vampire, Werewolf, and
Mage. This MUSH has been closed for "lack of time" on the part
of its administrators, as of 10/15/94.
- City of Darkness: located at melandra.cs.man.ac.uk 2000.
- Based on White Wolf's Storyteller Games and the
World of Darkness setting, and other horror-genre works. The setting is
modern-day Manchester, England. Despite admin efforts to the contrary, it has
lots of vampire poseurs hanging out in bars and copping an attitude. This is
a medium-sized MUSH, administrated in a coherent fashion.
- Conspiracy!: located at almond.enmu.edu 1066.
- This is a psuedo-historical medieval-themed MUSH. Although not actually
set in Western Europe, the intent is to duplicate the setting and the
conditions; the area is called "Cardas", and the tone is the Middle Ages
as they "should have been" (although plagues and the like exist). The game
is still very small. This MUSH has a home page.
- CrystalMUSH: located at moink.nmsu.edu 6886.
- Based on Anne McCaffrey's Crystal Singer novels. A quiet but
nicely done little place.
- CyberMUSH: located at tlaloc.cms.dmu.ac.uk 6250.
- A loosely themed social MUSH with virtually no players. Character
registration is required, with jpgruen@papaya.wustl.edu, and there
is no Guest character. This game is also plagued by an extraordinarily,
almost unbearably, slow connection to the outside world.
- The Damned: located at janus.library.cmu.edu 6250.
- A World of Darkness MUSH set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Its primary
emphasis is on the Camarilla Vampires. Though this game is quite popular,
there have been repeated allegations that Staff members here are prone to
abuse their wizard powers, and are not disciplined when caught (and,
furthermore, that the God, Democracy, is, more often than not, a raving
lunatic); those uneasy about such things may want to find another StoryTeller
MUSH (and there are LOTS of them) to spend their time on. More information
is available via its
FTP site.
Now, back in December, this MUSH died what was apparently a fiery death
by administrative schism, resulting in The Damned, and a split-off derivative
called Dark Gift (which has its own separate entry). This entry will be
removed whenever someone with authority decides whether or not The Damned
is really dead and gone, or not.
- Danse Macabre: located at omega.acusd.edu 9999.
- (3/2/95) You guessed it, it's a World of Darkness MUSH, at
least loosely. This time, the setting is Parys, in 1356. It is intended
to be "historically accurate" (within reason, of course). The policies
show a distinct AmberMUSH influence, with weak-consent and negotiation
emphasized as conflict-resolution mechanisms. Please note, however, that
the usual number-crunching White Wolf system has been preserved; this
is not a diceless game. Furthermore, the MUSH has three dozen administrators,
quite a few of them apparently overzealous twink-patrollers. Roleplay is
evidently faction-based, but the factions seem to place their emphasis upon
recruiting more members, rather than actually going out and doing things.
Time and effort seems to have been put into this game, though, so perhaps
there's hope.
- Dark Gift: located at snake.library.cmu.edu 6250.
- (3/2/95) This MUSH used to be The Damned, except, back in December,
an administrative schism tore the place into two MUSHes. Both places were
quite convinced theirs was the One True Way (of course), and in general, a
lot of childish carrying-on was done for a month or two. The dust seems to
have settled now, with Dark Gift remaining the Pittsburgh-by-Night MUSH,
and The Damned settling into a well-deserved ignominy. Scratch one more
White Wolf World of Darkness MUSH.
- DarkWeb: located at steak.nmt.edu 6251.
- (8/2/94) "San Jose by Fright", is the subtitle of this World of
Darkness MUSH,
focusing on "the dark side of Silicon Valley". It's a modern-era game,
utilizing the usual Werewolf, Vampire and Mage rules,
plus the new Wraith rules. Newly opened for roleplay on August 1st,
the core building is small, though the number of Staff members is enormous
(one would almost say "unwieldy", given that the list scrolls off one's
screen repeatedly). More information is available on
its FTP site.
Currently, characters must be registered with gazissax@netcom.com.
- Dawn Sisters: located at arms.gps.caltech.edu 9944.
- Set in post-Ninth-Pass Pern, this is the only Pern-based MUSH to fully
recognize the discoveries in the last Pern novel, All the Weyrs of
Pern. This is a world where the dragonriders are no longer welcome, and
the societal order is breaking down. A very small game. Character registrations
require providing a brief character history and outline; requests should be
emailed to khyri@netcom.com.
- Deep Seas: located at muds.okstate.edu 6250.
- A social MUSH in an underwater setting. It is the latest of the "Random
and Moira" MUDs, which include TinyHELL, Chaos, Asylum, DreamScape, and
Space Madness. A lot of "MUD dinos" hang out here. Charaacter registration
is required; email deepseas-request@muds.okstate.edu for one.
- Desert Wings: located at jpd.ch.man.ac.uk 4201.
- (3/2/95) This is Yet Another Pern MUSH. This time, the setting
is pre-Eleventh-Pass, with no discovery of the super-high-tech AIVAS.
Innovation has been proceeding along without it, though, and thus the
"feel" of the game is intended to be more Rennaisance than medieval.
- Discordia MUSH: located at discordia.phya.utoledo.edu 4201.
- (12/9/94) This is a relatively small, unthemed, relaxed social
MUSH. Character registration, with poyner@primenet.com, is
required.
- DoggieMUSH: located at aladdin.dataflux.bc.ca 8888.
- (12/9/94) This unthemed social MUSH is one of those sorts of
places which exist because someone was bored, had some friends, and decided
to put together a place to be silly and self-congratulatory.
- DragonDawn: located at cashew.enmu.edu 2222.
- This Pern-based MUSH is set in the Second Pass of the Red Star, when
some technology was still available and the societal structure was not as
tightly developed. It is quite small.
- DragonDreams MUSH: located at jpd.ch.man.ac.uk 4444.
- (3/5/95) In this latest installment of Pern-variant MUSHes,
this one is set shortly before the Eleventh Pass of the Red Star. This time,
the technological wondercomputer AIVAS was discovered, just like it was in
Anne McCaffrey's novels, and life on the planet settled down into idyllic
complacency, with the dragonrider population decreasing, but, for whatever
reason, the Red Star's coming back to drop Thread on the planet again, so
it's time for everyone to look sharp.
- DuneMUSH II: located at gardenia.berkeley.edu 4201.
- (9/30/94) The sequel to DuneMUSH, started by some of the former
administrators, this is subtitled "Life in the Padish Imperium", and is set
ten years before Dune. The game is still under construction, and is
slated to open to the public on 10/31/94. A request for an application for
House Head, feature character, or administrator status can be sent to
dune2-admin@gardenia.berkeley.edu; mark "APPLICATION" in the subject
line. Return email with a full application will be sent back in reply. Those
interested in this game may also be interested in the old
DuneMUSH FTP
Archive.
- DragonMUD: located at satan.ucsd.edu 4201.
- This is actually a heavily modified TinyMUD (the ancestor of MUSH, MUCK,
MOO, MUSE, and others), rather than a MUSH, but I include it on this list
since it might be of interest to many a MUSHer. It is based in 18th-century
London, and, unlike most Tiny-style MUDs today, its concentration is on
puzzles, although there's plenty of socializing to be done as well. There are
many, many well-done adventures to be explored and puzzled through. There are
also some excellent examples of ANSI art scattered throughout the game. It's
worth checking out at least once.
- Elendor MUSH: located at dana.ucc.nau.edu 1892.
- A roleplaying MUSH of moderate size, based on JRR Tolkein's The Lord
of the Rings. The setting is a decade before the War; thus, the events
of The Lord of the Rings haven't actually occurred, and the outcome
is not fixed (particularly since Bilbo's ring was stolen by Gollum, who
then lost it). Although this game has open character creation, new players
will be asked to provide an email address upon creation; characters without
them are purged in two days. There is a limit of one character per player.
After a recent administrative turnover, the game has gotten some impetus,
and currently seems to be benefitting from player enthusiasm and helpfulness
(particularly to new players), though the game still has the look of a much
newer and not-completely-constructed MUSH. More information is available via
its home page.
- Elenium MUSH: located at cs.ru.ac.za 4201.
- Based upon David Eddings' Elenium trilogy, set one hundred years
after the events in those novels (and ignoring the events of the sequel
Tamuli trilogy). More information is available on its
FTP site.
- Elysium: located at zeus.acusd.edu 9999.
- Despite repeated disasters, this game refuses to die. It was the second
World of Darkness MUSH to open to the public; it's set in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma, and the wolves howl regularly, despite the fact that there are
no wolves in Oklahoma. After yet another reconstruction, it's back up again,
and open to roleplaying.
- Fantasia MUSH: located at betz.biostr.washington.edu 4201.
- A loosely themed social MUSH of moderate size. Character registration is
required; email fantasia-registration@glia.biostr.washington.edu.
- Future Realms MUSH: located at fender.onramp.net 1701.
- A MUSH with a Star Trek theme. It's still in the building stage, with
a planned opening before the end of 1994.
- GarouMUSH: located at cesium.clock.org 7000.
- Based on White Wolf's Werewolf: The Apocalypse
roleplaying game. Registration for the game requires a character concept;
registration information and requests for the introductory documentation should
be sent to garou-reg@cygnus.com.
Use of "dice" to resolve situations is rare; emphasis is placed upon
storytelling. Click here for Garou's unofficial home page.
- GlobalMUSH: located at lancelot.cif.rochester.edu 4201.
- A MUSH with a global "theme", where almost anything goes.
- Gohs: located at valhalla.acusd.edu 9999.
- (10/18/94) An original world, heavy in detail, based on, among
other things, the ancient Aztec civilization. Gohs is a single city, and all
roleplay centers upon activities in that city. The game's administrators
apparently have a near-neurotic obsession with coding everything which can
possibly be coded.
- GothicMUSH: located at lfht2.hso.link.com 4444.
- Yet another World of Darkness MUSH-under-construction. The setting is
supposedly New York City. I have never been able to successfully connect
to the listed address.
- Guardians MUSH : located at jive.rahul.net 4205.
- (10/18/94) This is an original-themed roleplaying MUSH with a
background of time travel. It's newly-opened and evidently still under
construction.
- No entries under H yet.
-
- ImageCastle MUSH: located at fogey.stanford.edu 4201.
- A medieval-themed MUSH, a relaxed roleplaying environment with strong
social aspects. Still relatively small. An administrative schism occurred,
splitting this MUSH into two MUSHes; please see the entry on Castle D'Image
MUSH, for details.
- Incarnations MUSH: located at lumley.cais.com 4201.
- Based on the seven novels of Piers Anthony's Incarnations of
Immortality, this MUSH is set in a modern-day San Francisco where both
technology and magic work. It is a fairly small MUSH.
- Inner Spiral MUSH: located at inspiral.is.net 6666.
- (12/9/94) This is a light-roleplaying MUSH with a futuristic
theme. It is newly opened.
- Jurassic Weyr: located at adamwest.ins.cwru.edu 6250.
- (10/20/94) A very small MUSH, with a setting of a single Weyr and
Hold on an island in the middle of the ocean, in Anne McCaffrey's Pern world.
This is, in theory, a politics-free place for people to roleplay in a
relaxed manner; it's a retirement home of sorts for some of the Pern "dinos"
(hence the name). It has a motto of, "No twinks, no jerks, no weenies."
- No entries under K yet.
-
- Legion Outpost: located at muds.okstate.edu 2996.
- Based on DC Comics' Legion of SuperHeroes. It tightly follows
the continuity of the comic books; this game used to be LegionMUSH, though
it was restarted after the Zero Hour massive retroactive continuity stories.
Further information about the game is available in its
FTP archive.
- Lord of the Rings MUSH: located at foxtrot.cac.washington.edu.
- Based on JRR Tolkein's novels. Still rather small, but growing. Click here for LOTR's home page.
- Magic: The Gathering MUSH: located at heaven.hamline.edu 4201.
- Based upon the popular card game from Wizards of the Coast, this MUSH
exists solely for the purpose of playing that game. Player characters receive
the equivalent of two starter decks and two booster packs initially, and must
build up their decks by gaming or trading. The game requires email registration
at the creation screen. Some players may find using certain
TinyFugue macros
helpful.
- The Masquerade: located at phobos.unm.edu 4444.
- Alberquerque, New Mexico, in the World of Darkness. This is the second
attempt at this MUSH. The original died in the flames of an administrative
debacle, after poor quality control and general inanity destroyed its
infrastructure. This new MUSH was rebuilt from scratch, by a largely
different admin group, and has only recently re-opened for roleplay.
Nonetheless, it is one of the larger of the Vampire/Werewolf/Mage MUSHes.
- NarniaMUSH: located at dobest.lib.virginia.edu 6250.
- Based on C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia novels. It possesses a
rather strict TinyPlot policy, expressed in their news files with, "What
needs to be approved? Role playing involving more than two players,
especially that which involves death, violence, law-breaking, or intrigue;
political role playing; role playing involving questions of theme. What
doesn't need to be approved? Private romances. Snowball fights." (By the
news, presumably, besides snowball fights, the only other approved activity
players are allowed to engage in is private tinysex -- only two people
involved, of course -- as long as absolutely no intrigue is involved.)
Character registration is required, with nb@ftp.health.org,
peters@muff.cs.mcgill.ca, or vanceb@eworld.com. Click here for Narnia's home page.
- The NeverEnding Story: located at jove.cs.pdx.edu 9999.
- Originally loosely based on the theme of the novel The NeverEnding
Story, this MUSH (which is medium-sized, although it has few players)
now encompasses a few other themed areas as well, including a Robotech
area based on the television show (and comics, novels, and so forth). The
game is registration-only; email kris@paul.rutgers.edu to get a
character.
- Other MUSH: located at pebkac.satelnet.org 4201.
- (3/6/95) This is another of those small social-building MUSHes
where there's no point to anything aside from doing whatever you want,
and being silly and stupid. At least these people can spell.
- Patternfall: located at misc.acf.nyu.edu 4444.
- Based on Roger Zelazny's novels and the Amber Diceless RPG, just after
the Patternfall War. This is not yet an open game. Contact
jfischof@hawk.depaul.edu if you're interested in helping to build.
Character registrations are processed by chas@m-net.arbornet.org.
This game's "real" opening seems to have been delayed indefinitely.
- PernMUSH: located at astral.magic.ca 4201.
- Now over three years old, it's one of the longest-lived
roleplaying MUSHes around; it's still not a bad place for a beginner to
get started. Players connected simultaneously at night often exceed 130.
The world tends to be event-driven. Emphasis is placed on personal
advancement within the society.
- Peter's Pub: located at yacht.slip.andrew.cmu.edu 6250.
- (9/25/94) A tiny social MUSH, dedicated to spoofing other MUSHes.
It's largely private and unadvertised, and therefore not terribly populated.
Please note that it's on the same address as Dragonlance MUSH used to be, but
the two MUSHes are completely unrelated.
- PrairieMUSH: located at prairienet.org 4201.
- This MUSH is a branch of PrairieNet, a public information service for
Eastern and Central Illinois. It is primarily for PrairieNet members to
chat on, though non-members are welcome, and there are some areas intended
to be used for light roleplay. It's open to everyone, with new players
welcome; questions should be addressed to druantia@prairienet.org.
- Requiem: located at gangrel.hybrid.com 2030.
- (3/5/95) This World of Darkness MUSH-under-construction is set
in the year 2027, and it's a cross between the usual World of Darkness
supernatural gothic-punk setting and a cyberpunk setting. It takes various
liberties with the standard White Wolf setting, as well, changing around
clan relations and power levels. It's still under construction; more
information is available on
its home page.
- RiftMUSH II: located at cave.pg.md.us 4444.
- (3/5/95) Some of the administrators of the original RiftMUSH have
banded together to put together another one. This is based upon Raymond
E. Feist's Riftwar and Empire novels.
- Sanguinis Nobilis: located at 192.195.155.200 4444.
- (3/6/95) One more World of Darkness MUSH. It's London, this time.
This is still under construction.
- Shadowrun MUSH: located at picard.dnaco.net 4201.
- Based on FASA's Shadowrun game. Traditional cyberpunk, with
megacorporations, magic, and various other oddities. Character registration
requires a brief background/concept, mailed
to srun-reg@dnaco.net. More information is available via
its home page.
- ShardsMUSH: located at vesta.unm.edu 7777.
- Yet Another Pern MUSH, this one set just before the Seventh Pass of the
Red Star, in the northwestern area of the Northern Continent. Quite small
in size.
- SouCon: located at beechnut.enmu.edu 4201.
- Another Pern-based MUSH, this one set on the Southern Continent, in the
time frame of PernMUSH (which
covers the Northern Continent). It's structurally similar to PernMUSH, but
with far more adminstrative restrictions, and a much smaller, more intimate
player base.
- Spatial Wastes MUSH: located at chestnut.enmu.edu 2001.
- A multi-genre futuristic space-themed MUSH. Still quite small.
- Star Wars MUSH: located at starwars.arcade.com 4402.
- This MUSH is, as its name suggests, based on Lucasfilm's Star Wars.
The setting is two years after the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the
Emperor and Darth Vader; the fledgling New Republic and the remnants of the
Empire are scrambling for control. This MUSH does not necessarily follow the
storyline established by Timothy Zahn's novels (or the other recent Star Wars
novels published by Bantam).
- The Storyteller's Circle: located at draco.unm.edu 6666.
- "TSC", the "White Wolf Games Online Studio" is the only one of the many
Storyteller MUSHes that is "officially" run by White Wolf; the other games
have permission to use the system on-line, but are not official White Wolf
organs. This MUSH is intended to serve as both an information resource on
White Wolf's products, and as a "staging area" for small-group, short-term,
high-quality roleplaying. Those interested in helping with the project
should contact ragabash@netcom.com. It is now open to the public.
- SwordsMUSH: located at world.std.com 4201.
- Based on Fred Saberhagen's Book of Swords and Book of Lost
Swords novels. A very small game.
- Tales of Ta'veren: located at delphi.glendon.yorku.ca 4201.
- (8/11/94) Based on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time novels.
Contact rhonda@delphi.glendon.yorku.ca for information, or see the
game's home page.
This MUSH is still in a pre-opening stage. It is presently registration-only;
email oracle@delphi.glendon.yorku.ca to get a character.
- Tela Magica: located at tela.wizards.com 6250.
- Based on the world of the Storyteller roleplaying
game Ars Magica (formerly published by White Wolf, now published
by Wizards of the Coast). Character generation is complex; it helps to
have some knowledge of the system. This game is temporarily down, due to
problems with its host machine; rumor says that it won't be back up.
- Texas Twilight MUSH: located at seds.lpl.arizona.edu 6250.
- Yes, it's another World of Darkness MUSH. This time, the setting is
Dallas, Texas, in 1996. As usual, it supports Mages, Vampires, and Garou.
It recently went through a purge of the supernaturals, so to speak. This
was accomplished by simply retconning every bit of Vampire roleplay over
the past year, while maintaining the rest of the continuity. If this sounds
like a major contradiction of reasonability and sanity, well, yes, you're
right. Nonetheless, it was done, resulting in a fairly impressive player
exodus. Unsurprisingly, Texas Twilight is doing some heavy recruiting now.
More information is available on its FTP site and home page, or through jharvey@netcom.com.
- TinyCWRU: located at caisr2.caisr.cwru.edu 4201.
- A very large, very old social MUSH. The number of players connected at
any given time is, however, relatively low, due to sometimes extreme lag.
It has a home page which is also home
to the web2mush experimental link. Its machine also hosts a large
FTP site for MUD information.
- TinyMUSH: located at ftp.worcester.mednet.net 6250.
- (3/6/95) Larry Foard's original TinyMUSH. It's just around for
nostalgia fans; it's running the ancient code version, and is the sort of
place one goes to explore and consider how far things have come in just a
few years.
- TinyTIM: located at yay.tim.org 5440.
- Silliness abounds, in an uncontrolled environment. This is the place to
be if you're not interested in getting anything serious accomplished. It's
currently the oldest MUSH in existence, started over four years ago,
and at present it has one of the largest still-running
MUSH databases. It's running its very own divergent brand of MUSHcode.
For more information about TinyTIM, look through
its home page or
its FTP site.
- TooMUSH IV: located at occams.dfci.harvard.edu 7777.
- This is where the server hacks, programmers,
and other assorted wizards hang out. This is also the refugee MUSH, where
people go when their own home MUDs crash. No theme, almost no rules,
join the clue hangouts if you can find 'em. Click here for TooMUSH's home page.
- ToonMUSH III: located at brahe.phys.unm.edu 9999.
- (9/17/94) This is a game where players are cartoons -- Disney,
Warner Brothers, Anime, and so forth. It's a social MUSH. It shares some
players in common
with the previous attempts at MUSHes based on Toons; this one, however,
just started in mid-September.
- Transformers MUSH: located at megavolt.cc.vt.edu 4201.
- Based upon the Transformers toys manufactured by Hasbro. The Transformers
(the "good" Autobot robots and the "evil" Decepticon robots) were also the
subject of an animated TV series. (The port announcer at this site claims
that the new address is phoebe.dcs.acs.cmu.edu 4201, but as of 3/6/95,
this name is still unrecognized by my nameserver.)
- Transformers 2005: located at envirolink2.envirolink.org 6969.
- (3/6/95) The second attempt at a roleplaying MUSH based on the
Transformers. Lots of people running around having power fantasies and
doing the "my gun is bigger than your gun" thing.
- Trinity: located at nomadd.fiu.edu 4201.
- (10/18/94) One more World of Darkness MUSH. The setting is the
Research Triangle of North Carolina, in 1999. The machine seems to be down
more often than it's up.
- TrippyMUSH: located at pebkac.satelnet.org 7567.
- An unthemed MUSH, roughly similar in structure and mood to TinyTIM (which
formerly was located at Clarkson), but smaller and with far fewer players.
Both games are geared toward silliness, though TrippyMUSH goes to greater
lengths to make itself unthemed; this is a pure-social MUSH.
- TwoMoons: located at lupine.org 4201.
- Based upon Wendy and Richard Pini's ElfQuest comics. Some use is made of the ElfQuest roleplaying game rules.
- No entries under U yet.
-
- Veil of Seduction: located at purple.cybernetics.net 6250.
- (10/18/94) Oh boy, it's another World of Darkness MUSH!
This one's set in Charlotte, North Carolina. Though its address is currently
publicly listed, it does not presently seem to be in a state of readiness.
- Venus: located at thunder.indstate.edu 4000.
- (3/5/95) Take the World of Darkness. Now, transplant it to the
planet Venus, after a race of alien super-beings have more or less
transformed Life As We Know It. Like many other recent StoryTeller MUSHes,
this one has taken the concept of administrative management to an extreme,
instituting a Department of Quality Control. At least the news files are
spell-checked. There's
a home page available
for the curious.
- WackoMUSH: located at red-branch.mit.edu 6003.
- Another silliness-based MUSH. No theme, very few people.
- WeirdMUSH: located at occams.dfci.harvard.edu 6666.
- (9/20/94) Based on the roleplaying game Teenages from Outer
Space. Under construction; no other details available at this time.
- WriteMUSH: located at palmer.sacc.colostate.edu 6250.
- A MUSH for the teaching of writing. Documentation is available from its
FTP archive.
- X-MUSH: located at xmen.esi.com 1994.
- Based on Marvel Comics' The Uncanny X-Men and related titles, such
as X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force, X-Men Unlimited,
and Excalibur. This game is registration-only. Applications for
characters should be sent to x-apps@xmen.esi.com. This game is
down for lack of a site, but a search is continuing.
Not Yet Open to the Public
These games are under construction, are private,
or are otherwise not yet open to the public.
- Arcadia
- A World of Darkness MUSH, set in the chantry in the Tellurian outside
Gai's Near Umbra. More information is available through
its home page.
- Dominion
- This original-themed MUSH is based around a planet called Dominion. The
theme is futuristic-fantasy, roughly, with characters vying for power in a
number of different political arenas; roleplaying is emphasized. This game
is still under construction.
- Dune: Revenant
- (10/18/94) One of the new MUSHes to appear in the wake of the
closing of the original DuneMUSH, this one has a setting 10,000 years
after Chapterhouse: Dune (the sixth novel). The game is still
under construction. Character and information requests can be directed to
either shirin@artsci.wustl.edu or revenant@artsci.wustl.edu.
The game also has a home
page.
- MIB MUSH
- Mime's Invisible Box MUSH! All right, this one doesn't actually exist;
it's just a fake advertisment once posted to rec.games.mud.tiny, a
spoof satirizing the White Wolf MUSHes.
- Pale Heart
- Yes, it's another World of Darkness MUSH. At least this one departs from
the northern hemisphere; it's set in Cuzco, Peru. Its
home page
provides more information.
- Nihilism
- (3/5/95) One more World of Darkness MUSH. This one is based around
Mage: The Ascension. Interested parties should contact
pleder@piper.hamline.edu for details.
- Star Wars: A New Threat
- (12/9/94) A roleplaying MUSH set in the Star Wars universe.
It is still under construction. Questions should be addressed to
al311@cleveland.freenet.edu.
- WheelMUSH
- Based on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time novels. The setting is
one hundred years before the major events in the books. Contact
gconaty@lab.busfac.calpoly.edu if you're interested in helping
with the initial building.
- World of Darkness MUSHes
- (3/5/95) More under-construction MUSHes than you can shake
a stick at. Rumored or actual games include the following: Bizarre,
Delusions, Necropolis (based on Wraith), Praxis (set in Palo Alto),
and Protean (set in Seattle).
