General Information
The Stanford Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is a musical ensemble
under the Stanford University Music Department and a student-run
organization. Our 80 members have backgrounds in many different
fields and majors, ranging from Biology to Political Science.
Membership includes Stanford undergraduates, graduate students,
postdoctoral fellows, and community members. Music is the common
interest that brings us all together.
Very few of us are music majors, but as most Stanford students
excel at many activities, the SSO has become an excellent showcase of
Stanford talent. In our 1993-1994 season, under the baton of music
director Karla Lemon, the SSO was named
"Orchestra of the Year"
(5/22/94) by Paul Hertelendy, music writer for the San Jose Mercury News. He
reviewed our Northern California premiere of Henryk
Gorecki's Symphony No. 3 and applauded the SSO as sounding "more like
a conservatory orchestra than a collegiate group" (1/15/94).
