http://www-acs.ucsd.edu/home-pages/wade/golden.html (World Wide Web Directory, 06/1995)"golden@hobbes.ucsd.edu" is an unmoderated, subscription based mailing list for Golden Retriever enthusiasts.
Suitable topics include questions and answers regarding the Golden Retriever breed in general, news bits, article summaries, activities (rescue, CCI, therapy dogs, guide dogs), discussions of particular lines and breeders, shows, health care, training techniques, bragging, summaries of local GR club activities & newsletters, any other items which might be considered too Golden-introverted for the rec.pets.dogs heirarchy, cooperation on breed specific FAQ materials etc.
This list is not intended to subvert the rec.pets.dogs newsgroups, rather to supplement it - items of general interest should be posted to the newsgroup (if you have access to it). Faster response to specific questions, a slightly more private forum in which opinions can be expressed with reduced fear of repercussion, and (mainly) a place to carry on about Goldens far beyond what might be considered "polite" in the general purpose newsgroups are some of the benefits of the mailing list. There are currently 700+ subscribers on the list. Message volume may range from 20-60 per day. There is also a digest mode available which collects messages and sends them to you periodically as a single mail message with a table of contents. This mode really helps reduce the load on the system running the listserver, so it's highly recommended.
READ CAREFULLY:
To subscribe, send an email message to "listserv@hobbes.ucsd.edu" consisting of a single line formatted as follows:
subscribe golden firstname lastnamewhere firstname lastname is your own real name. The list server will deduce your email address. Do not include any other text in your message. A sample subscribe command:
subscribe golden John Doe
You will receive automatic acknowledgement of your subscription request (or an error message if your request is improperly formatted). The acknowledgement message will explain more about list protocol and useful listserv commands.
To start out in digest mode (recommended), add the line:
set golden mail digestto your subscription message after the 'subscribe golden' line.
Once you are subscribed to the mailing list, you will receive messages sent by other members of the list by electronic mail, and you can mail your own messages or replies to the other members of the list. When sending your own messages, be sure to mail them to "golden@hobbes.ucsd.edu", not to the listserv (the listserv is only for subscribe/unsubscribe and other administrative functions - golden is not the only list on the listserv)
Should you choose to discontinue your subscription you may do so at any time by sending an unsubscribe request to the listserv (the acknowledgement message explains how to do this).
