The Center for the Study of the American South

The Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS), was established in the summer of 1992 to consolidate and to build upon the longstanding tradition of Southern regional studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to producing the quarterly Southern Cultures, the Center cosponsors (with UNC's Institute for Research in Social Science) the twice-yearly Southern Focus Poll, a national public opinion survey with a Southern oversample. In time the Center hopes to establish a program of short term residencies for visitng scholars, in cooperation with the University's Southern Historical Collection and Southern Folklife collection.
