Welcome to Simon's Rock College

Introduction

SIMON'S ROCK is a liberal arts college that enrolls just over three hundred students on just under three hundred acres of truly beautiful land in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. The college's full name, Simon's Rock College of Bard, dates from 1979, when Simon's Rock merged with Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, about fifty miles west of us. Bard is an excellent liberal arts college too, somewhat larger (1000 students) and older (founded in 1860).

Simon's Rock is unusual and, we think, quite special, because this is the only institution of higher education in America devoted solely to the academic acceleration and enrichment of the younger scholar, that is, the student who, after the tenth or eleventh grade, is ready to leave secondary school for serious undergraduate study

At Simon's Rock, we believe in the ideals of interdisciplinary studies and general education, and we give our students the opportunity to explore and consider the full range of intellectual challenges available in a college curriculum. We want our students to have a broad-based exposure to art, language, literature, history, politics, and psychology. We want them to understand the fundamentals of mathematics and science; and to examine the cultures, the societies, and the environments in which they and others live. Finally, we want our students to understand how the academic disciplines can be used as tools for understanding themselves and the world. Their choices about what they want to study and what they want to spend their time doing should be made on the basis of knowledge and understanding, and not limited by a narrow pre-professionalism.
