The coast of Washington, Oregon and California are incredibly
beautiful and ideal for long-distance bicycling. The route
itself was part of the 1976 American Bikecentenial celebration.
In general, the roads are safe to ride, although at some points
it might be a bit scary as the road sometimes narrows while it passes
through river canyons, and the traffic, RVs and logging trucks
whiz by. But if you keep aware of traffic and respect the
road conditions, you should be okay.
Here are some trip-planning resources you'll want to have at hand to plan
your adventure along this wonderful bicycling route.

Bicycling the West Coast
... An excellent travelog of Chuck Anderson's September 1992 bicycle
trip from Seattle
to San Francisco in the fall of 1992. His travelog is chock-full of
Chuck's personal observations, anecdotes, and things to see along the
way, with many tips for both novice and experienced bicyclists.
Hostel-Hopping the Pacific Northwest
... In his travelog, Chuck stays exclusively at campgrounds and motels.
A rewarding alternative is to stay in hostels along the way. Hostels
are about one-third the cost of motels, and provide much better
value for the money. Most hostels have
- fully-equipped kitchens where you can cook your meals (saving restaurant money);
- laundries (very important to bicyclists);
- sightseeing information for the local area;
- communal rooms to relax and enjoy the company of other
adventure travelers from all over the world; and
- amenities you won't find in cheap motels, like 24-hour
saunas, jacuzzis, sporting goods, swimming, espresso bars and pubs --
all for the low cost of a hostel overnight
"Hostel-Hopping the Pacific Northwest" is Gene and Sandy Barnett's travelog of exactly the same route at Chuck
took, but
visiting hostels along the way (and adding more insider tips of things
to see and do).
Cycle-Hopping the Pacific Northwest
... is a melding of the two articles, Bicycling the West Coast and
Hostel-Hopping the Pacific Northwest, interlacing the locations
of great hostels onto Chuck Anderson's travelog, empowering you the bicyclist
with additional choices for overnighting along the way.
Bicycling the Avenue of the Giants
... through the world-famous Avenue of the Giants, all the way to the hostel
at Leggett. A milepost-by-milepost
record of things to see relating to the early Indians and Settlers, loggers,
and of course, the forests themselves. Forty-two separate milestones
sample everything the Avenue has to offer, from a rare "dawn redwood," to
the best spot to pick wild raspberries for dinner, and where to buy
the cream to put on them!
Avenue of the Giants Hostel
... a description of the Avenue of the Giants/Eel River Redwoods Adventure Hostel
in Leggett California, the last hostel before the famous "Leggett Hill"
between Leggett in the redwood forests, and Ft. Bragg on the Mendocino
Coast. The perfect place to rest for a couple of days, swim in the river,
soak your weary legs in the jacuzzi and sauna, have a relaxin time in
the pub, and ready those muscles for the trip up the legendary Leggett
Hill.
