History

James City County is rich in heritage. Jamestown was first settled here in 1607, the first permanent English settlement in the New World and home of the first industrial business venture in the United States, a glass manufacturing operation. James City County was one of the original counties established by the General Assembly in 1634 and was the seat of Virginia government until 1699.

In 1616, the settlers at Jamestown established America's first port by exporting tobacco and iron and importing finished products.

Topography is moderately level with gentle slopes. James City County is bordered by both the James River and the York River which, in addition to the Chickahomimy River and Skiffes Creek, provide drainage. About 40% of James City County is wooded. Most of the woodland is second-growth hardwoods, loblolly pine and Virginia pine.

The labor market area includes the County, the williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Newport News, MSA and the Richmond-Petersburg MSA with a combined total work force of approximately 1.1 million. Total employment in James City County in all industries is 1 7,457. Non-manufacturing employment is 11,787; manufacturing employs 2,584; with agriculture and public employers making up the remaining.
