Ohio State University College of Engineering Region One Home Page

Welcome to OSU College of Engineering, Computing Region One

This document is intended both as as on-line help resource and a way of keeping computer users in Region One aware of what both the Region and their fellow engineering students and faculty are doing.

Our region is working to move to Mosaic for on-line assistance for our users. Why use HTML and Mosaic?

Right now this home page is mainly intended as proof-of-concept, to give people an idea of what Mosaic and WWW are capable of doing. For those not familiar with Mosaic, WWW, and the Internet, check out this "Guide to CyberSpace".

Using UNIX on Region One's Workstations

Region One currently has 74 UNIX workstations, 50 HP's and 24 Silicon Graphics machines. If you're not familiar with UNIX and the X Window System, you may want to look at this UNIX Introduction and X Window System Introduction. If you're more inclined to hard-copy manuals, they are located in either 324 Hitchcock or 320 Bolz, depending on which maunal you're looking for.

If you have a question, it may be on the Frequently Asked Questions List . (You will find the answers to mail questions here!!!)

The Region One staff has created several commands which are only available on Region One workstations. These local commands can save considerable time or take care of things which are particular about Region One's machines.

Available Software on the Silicon Graphics workstations:

  • EagleView
  • ERDAS and Imagine
  • FAST
  • Gnuplot
  • I3Gvirgo
  • I-DEAS Master Series
  • Maple V.2
  • MatLab
  • ProEngineer and ProPDM
  • /usr/local/bin packages

  • Other Region 1 Computing Resources

Region 1 utilizes systems other than UNIX workstations. The main computing lab in Hitchcock supports 80 PC machines used for general computing use. An additional 6 PC seats are available in the Ag Engineering satellite lab. The PC's are Intel 80386 and 80486 machines using 8 and 16Mb RAM respectively running under the Microsoft Windows environment. Applications available on the PC's include MS Excel and Word, Maple, Matlab, Graphicad as well as tutorial programs for Engineering Graphics and Engineering Mechanics. 10 copies of AutoCAD are also available via floating license.

    Departmental Home Pages

This area is intended to let the departments in Region One show off their projects to the rest of the Region and the world. Note that these are still under development (when the authors have time) and thus are very incomplete.
  • Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Dept.
  • Agricultural Engineering Dept.
  • Civil Engineering Dept.
