LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN

Introduction

Cisco Systems is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) market by introducing another new ISDN product to Cisco's family of scalable ISDN solutions -- LAN2LAN Personal Office(tm) for ISDN.

LAN2LAN Personal Office is a remote-node product for ISDN featuring an Open Data-link Interface (ODI) workstation driver (IPX and TCP/IP) and an ISDN adapter called an ISDN Network Interface Card (INIC). LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN connects to all Cisco ISDN routers.

LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN is ideal for telecommuters working from home and small, single-user offices; these users will have transparent access to LAN resources such as databases, hosts, printers, e-mail, and more. LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN can also be used to connect a single desktop PC to the Internet using a high-speed ISDN connection.

Benefits Summary

Easy to Install and Configure

The user-friendly AutoInstall utility of LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN eliminates the guesswork from configuration. AutoInstall is so simple that even nontechnical personnel can install and maintain LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN.

ISDN Security Features

LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN supports Calling Line Identification and the PPP Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) to ensure a secure internetwork. Using Calling Line Identification, the router that receives the call examines the ISDN number of the LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN and verifies whether it is authorized. If the number is not authorized, the call is rejected and no charges are incurred by the calling party. This security feature can be used alone or in conjunction with the PPP authentication protocol CHAP.

Transparent DDR

LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN employs DDR technology with the simplicity of PC-client software; this function is handled automatically. During periods of inactivity, the ISDN connection is not active, and no charges are incurred. DDR means you pay for the ISDN connection only when there is data to send. LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN and the connected Cisco router achieve DDR by performing intelligent "spoofing" and filtering to ensure that periodic maintenance packets, such as network broadcasts, do not cause the ISDN line to become active.

PPP

Because LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN uses PPP, compatibility with PPP-compliant services, such as the Internet, is guaranteed.

LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN Configuration Examples

Telecommuters

Telecommuters work at home. They may do so for a number of reasons, such as: "clean air" laws that require their companies to limit the number of automobiles driven to work; they are LAN administrators who need to monitor their internetwork status 24 hours a day; they need to work long hours and prefer to work overtime at home; or they live far away from work, possibly in a remote office. These users have two things in common: they want transparent access to their internetworks, and they often require more performance and availability than analog phone lines can provide. After installing LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN, the users have remote access to the same resources at home as at the office.

Internet Users

Internet users require high-speed Internet connections from their homes or offices. They love to "walk the World Wide Web" and frequently download large .GIF, .JPG, and text files. These users can use LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN to connect to the Internet; they merely install LAN2LAN Personal Office for ISDN into their desktop PCs and use Web browsers, such as Mosaic.
