These release notes give an overview of the IRIX 6.0
Execution Environment software release from Silicon
       Graphicsr, Inc.

The IRIX Execution Environment consists of individually
installable software products. Each of these products has
its own set of release notes, which should be reviewed
before installation. Section 2.2 of these release notes
lists the software products and their release notes and
       explains how to view them.

Note: Included in the IRIX 6.0 package is the Software
License Agreement. This software is provided to you
solely under the terms and conditions of the Software
License Agreement. Please take a few moments to

This document contains the following chapters:

         1. Introduction

         2. Product Information

       1.1 Release_Identification_Information

Following is the release identification information for IRIX
       6.0:

       Software Product IRIX

       Version 6.0
       Product Codes SC4-W4D-6.0,
                          SC4-S4D-6.0

       1.2 Supported_Hardware

The IRIX 6.0 product set has been qualified to support POWER
Challenge, POWER Onyx, and POWER Onyx Extreme Silicon
       Graphics workstations and servers.

       1.3 Software_Compatibility

The IRIX 6.0 product supports several levels of
compatibility with previous IRIX releases. IRIX 6.0 can
support all user-level binaries that were supported with
IRIX 5.2, including binaries compiled in an IRIX 4.0.x

                                  - 2 -

environment. IRIX 6.0 coupled with the IRIX Developer's
Option 6.0 can support compilation and linking of 32-bit ELF
binaries to IRIX 5.2 libraries. This environment does not
support creation of products to be taken into an IRIX 5.2
environment for execution. It exists strictly for the
creation and execution of binaries in the IRIX 6.0
       environment.

Exceptions to the binary compatibility support include
products that access /proc or /debug, use kernel data
structures, rely on old defects, or use static libraries
       instead of shared libraries.

       1.4 Installation_Information

The IRIS Software Installation Guide describes the general
installation procedure for IRIX 6.0 and all optional
products. In addition, the Release Notes for each
installable product in the IRIX Execution Environment
       include product-specific installation information.

The IRIX 6.0 Execution Environment can be installed on a
formatted empty disk or over any previous operating system
       release.

Note: Be sure to make backup tapes of all files on your
system disk before upgrading to IRIX 6.0.

You can view online release notes for products before or
after installing the subsystem that includes the release
       notes.

To view a set of release notes before installing its
subsystem, your system must have mounted the CD that
contains the release notes subsystem. To view the release
notes on the CD, use the instructions in the pamphlet that
       is in the CD case.

To view a set of release notes after you have installed its
subsystem, follow one of these procedures:

o If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes''
from the Help toolchest. This displays the grelnotes(1)
graphical browser. From the Products menu on the
grelnotes menu bar, choose the product whose release
notes you want to view. Refer to the grelnotes(1) man
page for information on options to this command.

o If you have a non-graphics system, you can use the
relnotes command. Refer to the relnotes(1) man page
for accessing the online release notes.

Your IRIX 6.0 system software is accompanied by a complete
set of documentation, most of which is in online form. The
online documents can be viewed with IRIS InSight, which is
accessed either by choosing ``On-line Books'' from the Help
toolchest, or by typing the insight command in a shell.

Following are the end-user online manuals that are included
on your IRIX 6.0 CD, along with their subsystems.

If you received IRIX 6.0 with the purchase of a new system,
you also received a printed manual, the IRIS Software
Installation Guide. If you are upgrading an existing system
to IRIX 6.0, the copy of this manual you received with your
original system purchase is still current for your needs.

A set of printed administrator manuals is included with new
server systems and IRIX 6.0 upgrades for server systems.
These manuals make up the M4-ADMN-6.0 kit, which can also be
       ordered separately. They are:

       Printed Administrator Manuals

       Diskless Workstation Administration Guide
IRIX Advanced Site and Server Administration Guide
       Network License System Administration Guide
       NFS Administration Guide
       NIS Administration Guide
       Selected Site Administration Reference Pages

The content of these printed manuals matches that of the
online versions with the same titles. (Note that online
versions of the NFS Administration Guide and the NIS
Administration Guide are included on the NFS and Diskless
Administration Kit CD, which must be purchased separately.)
