IRIS Explorer Centers

The IRIS Explorer Centers (IEC) provide a `one stop shop' for people seeking support and information for the IRIS Explorer data visualisation system and IRIS Explorer based products and services. The IEC Mosaic and Gopher server provides information about IRIS Explorer software, support and services and gives access to technical reports, connections to ftp and other IRIS Explorer sites and example code, it can be contacted here. The IEC is run by The Numerical Algorithms Group Ltd.

What is happening to IRIS Explorer?

IRIS Explorer was originally developed and distributed by Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI). Interest in the system has grown over the years and SGI decided to move IRIS Explorer to an external independent software house for future development, implementation, support and distribution. A press release on the 25th July 1994 announced the new deal for IRIS Explorer:

The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) and Silicon Graphics, Inc. today announced that they will combine their strengths to provide a firm base for the development, porting, marketing, sales and support of Silicon Graphics' IRIS Explorer (TM) scientific visualisation and application builder software.
In recognition of the increasingly important and growing market for data visualisation, the two companies will cooperate over the next nine months on a joint development program resulting in the launch of the IRIS Explorer Release 3.0 software in the first quarter of 1995. The NAG team are working extensively with Silicon Graphics' software engineers to ensure a smooth and successful launch. At the completion of the joint development effort, NAG will provide training and support as well as sell and distribute the IRIS Explorer software on Silicon Graphics workstations and other platforms from Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Cray Research and Digital Equipment Corp.

Who are NAG anyway?

NAG are a UK-based not-for-profit company that has been developing and supplying software for professionals for over 24 years. NAG provides software in a range of languages for a wide range of platforms and covering most areas of numerical, statistical, symbolic and visualisation requirements. NAG also develops software tools and Fortran 90 compilers.
