Open Inventor Availability and Licensing
Silicon Graphics Release History
There are two major releases of Inventor on Silicon Graphics
platforms:
- Open Inventor (Release 2.0) uses OpenGL for its
rendering. It runs on all SGI platforms that support OpenGL and is
currently being ported to other platforms (see Availability on Other Platforms). Open
Inventor also contains many new features and improvements over IRIS
Inventor.
- IRIS Inventor (Release 1.x) uses IRIS GL for its
rendering. It runs on all SGI platforms.
These releases of Inventor are currently available from Silicon
Graphics:
- Open Inventor 2.0
This is the Open Inventor release. It runs on IRIX 5.2.
- IRIS Inventor 1.1.2
This release is an updated version of the 1.0.1 release of
IRIS Inventor that runs on IRIX 5.1.1.
- IRIS Inventor 1.0.1
This release contains fixes to bugs from the original 1.0 release of
IRIS Inventor. It runs on IRIX 4.0.5.
Availability on Other Platforms
Silicon Graphics has licensed Open Inventor to 3rd party
developers for the development of ports to all major Unix
platforms, and to Windows and WindowsNT.

Open Inventor Licensing
The Inventor run time option is bundled with the SGI operating system
and available on all Silicon Graphics machines. The Open Inventor
Development environment can be ordered by calling your local SGI sales
office, or 1-800-800-7441. Special university licenses are available
through the Silicon Graphics Varsity program
