The IRIS (r) 5080 Emulator product provides emulation of IBM 5080 (tm)
and IBM 3270 (tm)
terminals. It is a complete solution, delivering seamless, direct
access to applications, models, and data residing in an IBM
mainframe environment, all from a single vantage point: the IRIS
4D (tm) workstation.

High Performance with IRISXFR
IRISXFR is the Silicon Graphics(r) high performance proprietary host-
file transfer method. It supports both VM and MVS mainframe
environments, significantly exceeds IND$FILE throughput rates.
Using IRISXFR, end users can download files rapidly. Data is
automatically converted from EBCDIC to ASCII text, allowing data
to be entered into an application on the IRIS 4D system. End users
can then perform further data analysis and manipulation without
requiring an interactive session with the mainframe.
Value-Added Functionality
The IRIS 5080 Emulator helps boost end user productivity by adding
5080 and 3270 functionality to the high performance IRIS 4D system,
rather than having multiple specialized terminals. From a single
vantage point, end users can access multiple mainframe based
applications including CADAM (tm), CATIA (tm), PROFS (tm), and
DISOSS (tm). End users can also perform detailed design analysis
locally using workstation-based applications.
Easy-to-Use HLLAPI Using
the High-Level Language Application Program Interface (HLLAPI),
software developers can directly embed IRIS system-to-mainframe
workstation communications into their applications. HLLAPI can be
used to automate data transfer and repetitive sequences. It can
also be used to split applications that previously resided entirely
on the IBM mainframe, so that portions of the application best
suited to a high-performance graphics workstation can operate
invisibly on the IRIS 4D system.

IRIS 5080 Emulator
The IRIS 5080 Emulator supports emulation of a 5080 and a 3270
terminal for each IRIS 4D workstation:

IRIS Channel Adapter
The IRIS Channel Adapter emulates an IBM 50B8TM graphics controller
and supports a total of sixteen 5080 and sixteen 3270 sessions. It
supports DC Interlock, 3.0MB Data Streaming and 4.5MB Data
Streaming Protocol. Multiple IRIS Channel Adapters can be connected
to an IBM host computer.
IRIS 5080 Gateway
The IRIS 5080 Gateway card and software enables an IRIS 4D server
connected to the IRIS 5080 Channel Controller to act as a gateway
for up to 16 IRIS 4D workstations. The card contains 16KB of
writable control storage (no wait states), 256KB of data storage
that is dual-ported with the VME bus on a 16-bit data path, and
32KB of EPROM (two wait states) for program storage.
IRIS 50W channel Controller
The IRIS 5080 Channel Controller emulates an IBM 5088
graphics controller and supports a total of 64 addresses: 32 for
5080 and 32 for 3270 and uses DC Interlock Channel Protocol.
Multiple IRIS 5080 Channel Controllers can be connected to an IBM
host computer. The IRIS 5080 Channel Controller includes one
communications processor card and can support up to seven
additional cards. The IRIS 5080 Channel Controller is the same as
Spectrographic's DesignSet Communications Controller (tm) (DSCC).
