Hard disks

Hard disk prices are still falling every month. The decisions you need to make are whether you want an IDE or SCSI drive and how much you want to spend. We can then advise you as to how large a drive you can get.

If you have a new Risc PC 600 or Risc PC 700 running RISC OS 3.6 or you are a clan member and are running the beta-test filecore then you can use nearly any size of hard disc.

If not you will be limited to a partition size of 512Mbytes. Additionally if you are using an Acorn SCSI card or the internal IDE drive you will not be able to partition the drive so any space over 512Mbytes will be unusable. It is still often worth buying a 540Mbyte disk and formatting it to ignore some of the disk.
