Show us what you've got. Submit.

Renaissance 2.0 - HotWired's digital art gallery of still images, movies and sounds - is looking for submissions.

The mantra you should be chanting while creating your masterpiece is "bigger is not better." Not everyone can have a super-fast T1 Internet connection. Downloading a large file can be coma-inducing even to people with a zippy 14,400-bps modem. Check out Renaissance 2.0. There are file sizes on all the pieces in every section so that viewers have an idea of how long they have to wait. You'll also see that most files are under 400k. Try to make this your upper limit.

Submitting work by FTP or in digital format (floppies, SyQuests, CDs, DATs) is best, but analog (VHS, slides/negatives, prints, audio tapes) is not a problem. Label everything. Include your email address and other contact info. Tell us about your piece. What inspired you to create it?

Then there's the technical info we need to know...

Kino
file size?
how long?
frames per second?
compression scheme used (if any)?
does it need to be looped?

If you are submitting a longer piece (more than one minute), please understand that we probably will not show all of it. Suggest to us parts of your piece that are representative of the whole.

Retina
file size?
dimensions?
resolution?

Soundz
file size?
how long?
sampling rate?
bit-depth?
stereo/mono?
does it need to be looped?

Getting Files to Renaissance 2.0

The preferred method for file transfer to us is over the Internet. You may leave your files on our anonymous FTP server, ftp-in.hotwired.com, but you must notify us in advance so we can make certain that there is adequate space on the server - just send email to ftp-notify@hotwired.com. If you do not notify us, your files may be lost. Please be sure to include the names and a brief description of your files as well as the total size of your upload. Be sure you are using the Raw Data or Binary mode when uploading your files to the FTP site, and not ASCII or MacBinary. Each file you upload should be labeled with an appropriate suffix to denote the format of the file (e.g., a GIF image called my_wickedly_cool_image should be labeled my_wickedly_cool_image.gif).

We will also accept contributions of 100k or smaller via email. MIME attachments are acceptable.

If you have questions on whether or not your work is suitable for HotWired, send your emails to: movies@hotwired.com for video and animations
stills@hotwired.com for photographs, comics, and original electronic art
sounds@hotwired.com for samples, loops, songs, orchestral works...
text@hotwired.com for fiction, poetry, and essays

For the un-Wired types, we are also equipped to read various removable media, including Macintosh, MS-DOS, and UNIX tar and dd format 3.5-inch floppy disks and 3.5-inch 21-MByte flopticals. We can also handle Macintosh format 44- and 88-MByte SyQuest cartridges (your platters will be returned to you). DAT cassettes in Macintosh Retrospect or UNIX tar format are also acceptable for very large files, but only as a last resort.

Suggestions, questions, or comments on the production process: contact Renaissance Producer Jill Atkinson. The best way to reach her is to email jillo@hotwired.com, though she is also reachable by phone: +1 (415) 222 6359.

If you have read this far, you will probably be glad to know that HotWired is currently paying about US$50 for the images, sounds, and videos created for Renaissance 2.0.
