Yuzana Khin was the first woman to help direct the All-Burma Federation of Student Unions. At the age of 19, she organized rallies, led marches, and made speeches advocating a return to a democratic Burmese government that respected basic human rights.
On several occasions, the Burmese army opened fire upon peaceful anti-government student demonstrations. This violence forced Yuzana into hiding with other students in the Thai-Burmese border jungles. Even here she was pursued, but she managed to escape to Bangkok and apply for admission to the United States as a political refugee. In 1993, she enrolled as a student at Georgetown University, hoping to gain the education and the skills to return to her country and reclaim it for democracy.
