Nomgcobo's Story (AIFF 256k)

Nomgcobo Sangweni was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and educated at the University of Natal. Active in the Natal Organization for Women, Nomgcobo was jailed for protesting the detention of children by security forces.

She and her daughter, Yolanda, then 9, were detained and subjected to 14 hours of interrogation without rest. Although Yolanda was released after two days, this information was withheld from Nomgcobo, who was held for six months, including two months in a hospital for treatment of wounds received from severe torture, Her release came largely as a result of letters written on her behalf by members of Amnesty International.
