Gitobu Imanyara is an attorney. He is also editor-in-chief of the Nairobi Law Monthly. Gitobu believes fervently in the basic human right of freedom of expression.
Though publishing a newspaper and stating his views have been Gitobu's only crimes, he has been arrested an jailed repeatedly. Charges against him have been included treason and violating publishing laws, but each was later dropped without explanation.
A father of two children, these arrests have cost Gitobu and his family dearly. The final month of his most recent detention were spent in a hospital because his health had deteriorated so severely. In countless cases like Gitobu's, Amnesty International works for the release of people imprisoned for their beliefs.
