Hsiu-lien Annette Lu is the founder of a feminist press, a women's resource center, and a women's hotline in Taiwan.
With law degrees from National Taiwan University, the University of Illinois, and Harvard, Lu is well-qualified to address an audience on the limitations of traditional Taiwanese female roles. Yet she was arrested when she gave a speech at a human rights rally in Kushiong in December 1979. Her address was cited as an attempt to overthrow the government, and she was sentenced to five years in prison.
After her release in 1985, Lu continued to work toward her goal of helping Taiwanese women to achieve parity within the legislative bodies of her country. She has founded the Taiwanese chapter of National Organization of Women and continues to campaign for national office.
