Foreword by The Lord Provost of Edinburgh

The Right Honourable Norman Irons

On behalf of all the citizens of Edinburgh may I welcome you to the ancient and historical capital of Scotland. Whether your visit is for business or pleasure I am sure you will enjoy your stay in Edinburgh and I trust this official guide will be an enjoyable souvenir of your time with us.

Throughout these pages you will see that the architecture of many ages is represented in the city, and I like to think that our history is written in the stones of our buildings as well as the achievements of our citizens, some of whom are featured throughout the guide.

Over many centuries Edinburgh has been one of the major cities of Europe, a status confirmed by our hosting of the European Council of Ministers meeting - the Euro Summit - in 1992.

Edinburgh is not just about history, however, important though that history is. The city has been and will continue to be a world leader in the sciences and particularly medicine, and we have a vibrant present and an exiting future as an international centre for the financial industry and for the arts.

Please enjoy your stay in Edinburgh and do tell your family and friends about our beautiful city and the warm welcome that awaits them.
