Dhol Blasters
The Dhol Blasters, Gurcharan Mall and Narindar Singh, are two whirlwinds of activity on the Bhangra scene in England, where they both play in several bands as well as coaching and teaching dancers and dance teams. Gurcharan owns a brand-new music shop in Handsworth, and is "set to go into business in a big way."The sounds you hear are excerpted from their CD, Bhangratulations, which they created to emphasize the modern and traditional sides of dhol playing, "the dhol (a type of drum) being the root, life, and food of Bhangra music, and therefore unequaled by any other instrument in its field."
Bhangra is a type of Indian dance music that is very popular in areas with large Indian communities such as London and Vancouver. Bhangra combines traditional instrumentation and modern techniques of mixing and sampling to create a style that has as much in common with the dance floors of New York and London as it does with Punjab.
