Angel Studios
The gleeful vertigo of Angel Studios' "power zoom," created for an ad campaign in 1990, hints that the production company was already itching to bring its work into three dimensions. Angel, best known for computer animations such as those in The Lawnmower Man and Peter Gabriel's "Mindblender" video, has recently been devoting most of its energy to an innovative virtual reality lab. The studio premiered two multiplayer, real-time interactive games at this year's ACM SIGGRAPH in Orlando, Florida. One of the games, called F1 NetRace, employs three-screen projection to represent 120 degrees of a Formula One racetrack. Players maneuver through two miles of simulated track, jockeying for position with cars controlled by other drivers. More to our taste, though, is Dr Megow's Mad Cap Ornithon - a frantic, engaging ostrich race through a surreal obstacle course complete with secret passages and whimsical hazards. Look out for the deadly happy-face pendulums. For more about Angel, email diego@angel.com.
