Fatima Ibrahim, a writer, speaker and leader in the struggle for women's rights in the Third World, has paid dearly for her beliefs. At 17, Fatima was a founding member of the Sudanese Women's Union. In 1968, the dictatorial Sudanese government arrested Fatima's husband, a trade union leader. He was executed, and Fatima was places under house arrest for over two years.
Continuing her work for the Sundanese Women's Union, Fatima was harrassed, threatened, and many times illegally detained. In 1976, she was arrested and imprisioned. On one occasion, she was denied food and fell into a coma.
Fatima is now living in London where she continues her fight for women's rights. Because of her beliefs, it is still unsafe for Fatima to return to her own country.
