Demon Internet announced on the 14 September 1995 that it will provide local-call access to the Internet for the whole of the UK.
Demon Internet is the first Internet Service Provider in the UK to be able to announce local call access for the whole of the UK. It is also the first time that any Internet Service Provider in the world has offered local call access to the whole of any one country.
100% coverage will roll out from the end of October 1995, allowing all UK Demon Internet customers to enjoy connectivity at the BT local call rate.
Cliff Stanford, founder and Managing Director of Demon Internet, comments "We are very pleased to be able to offer Internet users all over Great Britain and Northern Ireland local-call access. It is in keeping with our commitment to make Internet connectivity feasible for millions of UK customers by keeping costs as low as possible".
"It is also exciting to steal another march on our rivals by being the first UK service provider to announce that local call access will be a reality for all of our UK customers".
Simultaneously, the company announces that all the Demon Internet numbers will be suffixed with '666', making them instantly recognisable. So, for example, number charge group 01469 has the Demon number 01469 469666; and number charge group 0161 has the Demon number 0161 3859666.
Demon Internet will no longer be referring to tPoPs (traditional Points of Presence) and vPoPs (virtual Points of Presence), the two phrases that the company originally coined. ROMPs (Regionally Organised Modem Pools) is the new buzzword. There are 3 ROMPs, covering Central England and Southern Scotland; Southern England and Northern Scotland; and London.
Basic coverage of the UK will be provided in 4 parts. These are:
* The London Energis ROMP (Regionally Organised Modem Pool). This has a single 0181 telephone number which provides local call access to the Greater London area and surrounding towns.
* The National Energis ROMP. This has 78 normal telephone numbers (59 of which are already active), and provides local call access to central England, southern and central Scotland, and south-east Wales.
* The National Mercury ROMP. This will have 59 normal telephone numbers providing local call access to East Anglia, south and south-west England, parts of Northern Ireland, and central and eastern Scotland. Some customers in the Republic of Ireland will have local rate access to some of these numbers as well. In addition, an 0645 number will provide local rate access to the NMR for those customers not provided for in any other way.
* The Cambridge tPoP. This has a single 01223 number, providing local rate access to Cambridge and the surrounding areas. Backup coverage will be provided by: * The Isle of Wight and Maldon tPoPs. There are currently no plans to close these, though we reserve the right to review this. All customers local to these tPoPs will be local to a number on the NMR.
* The Edinburgh and London tPoPs. It is currently planned to withdraw these once the ROMPs are fully active. The announced Chelmsford tPoP has been cancelled. All customers local to this area should have local access to the NMR well before the planned opening date of Chelmsford.
