Overview of CIX (Compulink Information Exchange)
Overview of CIX - Europe's largest computer conferencing system
CIX (pronounced 'kicks') is a highly popular, British based, conferencing system, providing access to hundreds of conferences on a wide variety of topics. Conferences are simply forums for like-minded people to get together to discuss their favourite topic, to seek help and to provide help for others in return. CIX has conferences on a range of specialised subjects from computers to gardening, conferences for people living in places such as Cambridge, Cornwall or Manchester and conferences in which to exchange jokes or to learn a foreign language. Whatever your interest, there is likely to be a conference on CIX to cater for it. And what if there isn't? Then just start your own! It costs nothing to create your own conferences, and you could be filling a important gap for many hundreds of people.
CIX is a computer conferencing system - available 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Unlike real conferencing, you can pick and choose what you read and when you read it - CIX will store messages waiting for you until the next time you log in. You can also discuss matters with people who you would not normally meet in your day-to-day work, an exchange opinions and information on your areas of expertise. As well as a wide range of technical knowledge - questions are often answered within minutes of their posting - there is also a large selection of more social conferences.
In addition to conferencing, CIX provides private electronic mail, to both users of CIX and other computer users on the Internet. Over 50 gigabytes of files are available for downloading for all sorts of computers, including the Commodore Amiga, Apple Macintosh, UNIX, PC's using Windows or DOS. People are uploading programs all the time, often including bug-fixes and the latest versions of programs.
CIX has recently decided to adopt and support a package to make access easier ifyou run Microsoft Windows: it is called AMEOL and an evaluation copy is enclosed. If however you do not own a PC or do not run Microsoft Windows 3.1, CIX is easily accessible by using any communications package for your computer.
