International Internet ChainArt Project

Explore the groups of images.

The International Internet ChainArt Project was a collaborative computer art project conducted using the Internet as a vehicle to obtain and deposit the images and communicate with members. The project began on April 5th, and lasted until May 28th, 1993. During this time, 136 images were created from individuals in 10 different countries. The participants were divided into 23 groups, and each participant had 1 week to manipulate an image.

The students in the University of Oregon's Computers in Art class began the project by uploading an image to the ftp site. The next person in the group downloaded the image and added to it or manipulated it, then uploaded it back to the ftp site. Each person in the group continued this process until the last person had altered the image. The ChainArt Project was organized by Prof. Bonnie Mitchell and the University of Oregon Computer Art students acted as group coordinators.

The project was a lot of work, fun, and an incredibly educational experience as we battled file transfer and conversion problems. The people involved in the project ranged from students, teachers, artists, mathematicians, scientists, animators, designers, filmmakers, whole classes, etc.
