Downloading and Installing ALP

The trick to getting the ALP Client on your system is downloading it. The rest is easy. If you do not have WS-FTP or a FTP program you may have problems downloading. It depends on what browser you have, what protocol you are using, and the type of PC you are running. All FTP programs work very well. FTP using a browser does not always work. If you must use your browser make sure the cache is clear and that you download to a directory that is a subdirectory of the browser directory. Just make a directory and call it temp or download. ALP needs to be installed in its own directory under the root directory. You can do that after you have downloaded the self-extracting executable. To download using your browser, just click on the correct version in the Availability section.
If you can't get your browser to work and you don't want to mess with FTP programs we will send you ALP on disk for $25.00 US. This fee covers postage and handling. Just click here for snail mail.

If you are using FTP (Please!) the logon is anonymous guest, host type: auto detect, host name: ftp.theworld.com, remote directory c:\pub\ftp\alp files alp16c.exe for Windows 3.1 with winsock, alp32c.exe for windows95 or NT, and for the brave at heart there is a alp16c.zip and RAS for windows 3.0 in the RAS subdirectory. I assume that the older versions will be using shell FTP to get in. You can try installing it in Windows 3.0 but there are no guarantees.

Additional ALP Notes:
1. Sorry Apple users we do not support MAC software at this time.
2. ALP features are not fully operational on Netscape Browsers.
Specifically no remote browser control. We are working on it.
3. Video teleconferencing for ALP is coming!

Once you have downloaded the ALP client all you have to do is click on the .exe file and it will self extract. After it has self-extracted create a directory named ALP and run the .exe file created when ALP self extracted. Alp will automatically install itself in the alp directory provided you tell it the pathname. ALP will default to c:\alp if you do not enter a different path. ALP will automatically install in any Mosaic or Netscape browser currently installed on your PC unless you tell it not to.

The only thing left to do is to configure ALP as the chat viewer for your browser(s). ALP can be invoked by clicking on the ALP icon which will call up a directory of all ALP servers that are available. You do not need a browser running to use ALP this way unless you want to send browser pages, pictures, etc. ALP can also be invoked by going to a web page that has ALP installed. Somewhere in the page there will be a hypertext link that will start the chat session. It could say chat, talk, live, a name, or what ever the author chooses. Hopefully it will be obvious. The FIRST time you do this your browser will ask for you to configure a viewer. The viewer is ALP.exe which is located in the ALP directory. NO OTHER VIEWER WILL WORK. Once the viewer is configured ALP will work anyway you use it.
