What Duke of URL does

Duke of URL is a small AppleScript application which runs in conjunction with Netscape. It reads the URL of the window you are currently looking at, and stuffs the said URL into a mini AppleScript application. By double-clicking on that application, you canhave Netscape go straight to the saved URL.

The mini-applications are created by duplicating the file "GetURL Template" (which is stored in the Preferences folder) to the folder that you have selected for your saved URLs. If the GetURL Template is not in the Preferences folder, Duke of URL will prompt you to find the file (which it will then copy to the Preferences folder).

We recommend you put Duke of URL in the Apple menu, for easy access from Netscape.

Current limitations of Duke of URL

Duke of URL prompts you for a save-to folder when you first start the application, but it has no way of resetting this folder, short of renaming the folder, or recompiling and resaving the script -- it will then prompt you for a new folder. This should be fixed in version 1.1

Duke of URL really should store the Template somewhere else apart from the Preferences folder. It would be even better if the file could be created on the fly, but AppleScript has no way to create a script application from a script.

Duke of URL should be directly launchable from inside Netscape, either by utilizing something like one of the hotkey third-party programs or by adding a separate menu/menu-item to Netscape itself (which may require hacking Netscape, and that is probably not desirable). The current workaround is, as mentioned above, to use the Apple menu to access Duke of URL.

Version History

Working title of "SnarfURL", there were several "pre-release" versions, with many interesting (and grotesque) bugs. Email to the address below if you are really interested in what we went through, or read the code comments (in the "code comments" file in this folder) which will explain exactly what the code does.
