Java(tm) Developers Kit

Version 1.0, Macintosh Beta 1

Java(tm) Developer's Kit (JDK) 1.0, Beta 1 Release
Macintosh

Welcome to the Beta release of the Java Development Kit for Macintosh. The JDK is used specifically to allow people to write Java applets for use in a Java aware browser using the 1.0 Java Applet API. You can not build standalone applications with this release of the JDK.

The JDK incorporates the Java virtual machine, along with the AWT (Abstract Window Toolkit), and networking packages. It also incorporates an applet viewer for viewing applets outside of a web browser.

In order to make the release easier to use on the Macintosh, we have used a slightly different folder hierarchy than for the other JDK releases. For example, a "bin" folder doesn't make much sense on the Mac, so we moved the executable applications to the top level folder. Naturally, the content remains the same.

The JDK requires a Macintosh using a 68030 (or greater) or PowerPC microprocessor running System 7.5 with 8 megabytes of real memory and 7 megabytes of hard disk space. The JDK is fully compatible with virtual memory and most third party extensions.

Downloading Instructions, Apple Macintosh

The Java(tm) Developers Kit (JDK) lets you write applets that conform to the frozen applet (1.0) API for the Java Programming Language. This is the first public release of the JDK for Macintosh.

The JDK comes with two documents. The COPYRIGHT file has copyright and license information about the JDK. The README file has information about the JDK, including:

It also has information on using the Applet Viewer and the format of the APPLET tag.

How to download the release

The 1.0 BETA Macintosh release supports System 7.5 running on Power Macintoshes and Macintoshes with at least a 68030 processor.

As a compressed installer, the 1.0 BETA release is just under 2.5 Meg. After installation on your hard drive it will take up just over 6 Meg.

The simplest way to download the release is to click on one of the following links. (Note: The ftp.javasoft.com server at Sun is frequently swamped with requests. Using a mirror site near you may be faster.)

MacBinary (*.bin) format

Macintosh hqx format This will automatically download a compressed file with the JDK installer to your machine.

If you prefer, you can download the release via anonymous ftp from one of the following sites:

Or you can use Fetch or Anarchie to download the files and de-compress them at the same time.

Unpacking the downloaded file

If you used FTP to download the Macintosh JDK, you must first decompress the file. Use Stuffit to decompress the MacBinary format file, use DeHQX or BinHex4 to decompress the hqx format.

Installing the Release

After downloading, you can run the installer program which will create a folder on your Macintosh called "JDK-beta1-mac" (unless you changed the name). Installation is now complete.

You can run the Applet Viewer by doing the following:

1. Open the folder Sample Applets
2. Open the folder WireFrame
3. Drop the file example1.html on the application Applet Viewer
