Help and Frequently Asked Questions
What's new? Not much, aside from the launch of several interesting and
informative Internet
training courses! New users who have mastered a World
Wide Web Browser should check out The Internet
Roadmap, a great introduction to the Internet.
The searchable index of all the help
pages is a nice, fast way to jump straight to what you're looking for.

Local Help Sections
- Usenet News
- If you want to read the Usenet
news, you'll need to use a "newsreader." Two of the most commonly
used are trn (threaded read news) and nn (no news (is good news)). Usenet
Newsgroups: Resources is a good general overview of news as a
whole.
- Electronic Mail
- You'll be sending and receiving electronic mail, and to do so you'll
want to use either pine (recommended) or elm.
- Text Editors
- If you want a simple one, use pico or joe. Unix guri are
constantly at war as to which is better, vi or emacs. (vi, vi!)
(slap!)
- Offline News and Mail Readers
- To save your on-line time, you might want to use an offline news and mail reader.
- Internet Relay Chat
- The Internet Relay Chat is, as
Dave Barry put it, "Like CB radio but with more typing." Tons of
information is available (if you have Internet access) at IRC Related
Resources on the Net.
- Unix
- The Unix shell can be confusing at
first, but is extremely powerful.
- SLIP and PPP Connections
- SLIP and PPP connections provide a graphical
interface to the Internet. Point and click, that is. And you can see
pictures.
You might want a list of all the
local Internex Online newsgroups (io.*). You can even read them
using your Web browser.
Still totally lost? Two good ways to figure out the Internet are to
look at the online guides and to
buy a good book (yes, actually printed
on real paper).
