Delivering on its commitment to provide customers with easy-to-use solutions for today's complex computing environments, Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced web-server functionality for its entire HP 3000 product line.
Introduced recently for the HP 9000, Open Market's WebServer solution is now available in versions for MPE/iX and UNIX system products and is an HP-supported solution designed to provide high performance, security capabilities and easy access to the World Wide Web.
"Our customers have continually told us that ease-of-use and plug-and-play capabilities are critical to meeting their Internet computing needs, and HP is dedicated to meeting these needs," said Maria Cannon, marketing manager for HP's Commercial Systems Division. "Once again, HP is demonstrating its commitment to providing choices to its customers. By providing Open Market WebServer software on the HP 3000 business server, HP delivers industry-leading, easy-to-use Internet functionality and, at the same time, can meet our customers' wide range of computing requirements."
"The Open Market WebServer software for the HP 3000 provides exciting opportunities for us to easily access the World Wide Web through our HP 3000," said David Myers, systems analyst for Time Customer Service. "We're looking forward to being able to make the HP 3000 a viable Web Server, and this solution from HP allows us to do that."
HP 3000 business servers with Open Market Inc.'s WebServer software are ideal for publishing information via the Internet or on a company's internal network or Intranet. For example, companies building internal web sites can publish white papers, human-resources manuals and electronic phone books, as well as query plant databases across the country for manufacturing information. By using Open Market WebServer software and common gateway interface scripts, companies can avoid duplicating information; users can be linked to databases across the world; and publishing costs, including paper distribution and printing expenses, are virtually eliminated.
"Open Market's WebServer software is known for its reliability and high performance," said Shikhar Ghosh, chairman of Open Market, Inc. "With the help of vendors like Hewlett-Packard, we are able to enhance our reach into the server market, particularly for Intranet applications. In addition, our WebServers' multithreaded architecture enables companies using the HP 3000 to efficiently support more simultaneous connections than single-threaded process architecture. We're confident the customers of HP and Open Market will benefit from this solution."
The Open Market WebServer software for the HP 3000 will be available in April. Prices begin at $1,650. Open Market WebServer software will be supported on every HP 3000 running MPE/iX 5.0 and higher. The required TCP/IP transport is bundled with MPE/iX 5.0. For direct access to the Internet, it is necessary to have a LAN connected with a router to a service provider. HTTP software is included with the WebServer.

The PA-RISC(1)-based HP 3000 is a flexible, open server with exceptional reliability and transaction performance. The MPE/iX operating system offers many of the same open-systems features typically associated with UNIX system platforms, as well as additional advantages that make it ideal for mission-critical applications, client/server processing and high-end scalability. These capabilities are highly valued by HP's customers. The HP 3000 was rated No. 1 in overall customer satisfaction in the April 1994 Datapro survey of major U.S. midrange systems.
