Internet Software
To make the most of your SLIP or PPP connection, you need both software to connect to us and some good Internet client programs. To make it easier to find the programs we list among our favorites, we've provided links to various places from which you can download them.

Macintosh Software
All of the software listed below includes documentation files, on-line help, or both. Please refer to this material for answers to your questions before requesting help. Remember to try Balloon Help!
Utility Software
- StuffIt Expander: This invaluable utility is used to translate files from a variety of formats used to store them on the Internet into a format you can use on your computer. Get this first! Freeware
- ShrinkWrap: Many larger programs (such as Open Transport) come in the form of disk image files. This program will help you convert them into floppy disks, or even mount the images themselves as virtual disks on your desktop for easy installation. Freeware
- Internet Config: This utility enables you to set common Internet preferences for many programs at once. Some programs require it, and it makes your life a whole lot easier with other programs. Public domain freeware
Network Software
- Open Transport: Owners of PCI bus Power Macintosh systems (including the PowerMac 7500, 8500, and 9500) will need to upgrade their Open Transport software to the latest version. Free upgrade for PCI Mac users
Connectivity Software
- MacPPP: Going by a variety of names, variants of MacPPP have been the connection method of choice for Mac users since 1994 (at least). This program is used in conjunction with MacTCP or OpenTransport to establish your connection to the Internet. Freeware
- PPPop: A handy little utility, PPPop puts a small button on your screen to connect and disconnect your PPP session without needing to open the Config PPP control panel. Also includes a timer to help keep you under your 2-hour limit. Freeware
Electronic Mail Client
- Eudora: Eudora Pro (commercial product) is the best email program we've seen. Eudora Lite (freeware) is the second-best. Freeware and commercial
FTP Clients
- Anarchie: Anarchie (pronounced like "anarchy," not "an archie") is a beautifully Finder-like FTP client, ideal for browsing FTP sites and downloading files. $10 shareware
- Fetch: Fetch is another FTP client, well-suited for batch upload and download operations -- very good for maintaining a Web site. $25 shareware
Newsreader
- NewsWatcher: An excellent, full-featured newsreader with an elegant interface. NewsWatcher is no longer being developed, but is more than enough for most users already. Make sure to download the excellent user documentation along with the program. Freeware
Web Browsers
- MacWeb: A lightweight browser, quick and with low system requirements. Good for 68000 and 68020 Macs, or any machine with 4 megs RAM or less. Commercial evaluation
- Netscape Navigator: A popular browser. Although properly-coded Web pages can be read in any browser, some pages with lots of bells and whistles will require Netscape for proper viewing. Commercial evaluation
- Netshark: A newcomer from Intercon with some neat features, including built-in sound and movie players. Worth keeping an eye on. Freeware 'lite' version.
Telnet Client
- NCSA Telnet: The standard telnet application for the Mac. Telnet is used to access remote UNIX hosts for certain operations that are awkward or impossible through indirect client programs. Freeware
