FedWorld

What is the FedWorld Information Network?

The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) introduced FedWorld in November 1992 to help with the challenge of accessing U.S. Government Information online. In an electronic age when more and more government agencies are racing to get online, FedWorld can help you keep up with the flood of information worldwide. We are providing a comprehensive central access point for locating and acquiring government information.

The goal of NTIS FedWorld is to provide a one-stop location for the public to locate, order and have delivered to them, U.S. Government information.

FedWorld got a start in November of 1992 when the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, started a small dial-up access system that allowed users to connect to about 50 other Government bulletin boards, as well as get information on the different Government information products available from NTIS.

Today, the original FedWorld can be accessed via modem or using the Internet telnet command at fedworld.gov and provides access to more than 130 government dial-up bulletin boards, most of which, are not available via the Internet. FedWorld has been accessed more than a half million times by about 80,000 users.

Because it is NTIS' goal to make FedWorld available in as many different interfaces as possible, a WorldWide Web(W3) server has been developed. We expect this interface to grow rapidly, as we use the power of the Web to explore the world of U.S. Government information.

In the tradition of the dial-up FedWorld, we have provided links to U.S. Government W3 servers and other U.S. government information sources. Rather than just giving you a long list of these servers, we have sorted them into subject categories -- the same subject categories that we sort the more than 700 new information products that NTIS receives each week -- so that you can quickly navigate to servers of interest.

In the near future, we expect to expand the U.S. Government server list to include U.S. Government Gopher and FTP servers. If you know of a U.S. Government Homepage/Gopher/FTP server that isn't on the list, please send e-mail to webmaster@fedworld.gov or call (703)487-4850.
