From January 20 until May 27, 1996, the Kunsthalle Tübingen will be exhibiting a carefully prepared selection of many of Auguste Renoir's paintings. The objects on display reflect the complete spectrum of the artist's creative endeavors and represent work extending over more than half a century. The genius' unique method of working can be studied in a wide range of selected examples covering many themes, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and figure compositions. The paintings, all of which are regarded as major works of art, have been loaned from renowned international collections and museums in many cities, including Washington D.C., New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Sao Paulo, Stockholm, Madrid, London, Paris, St. Petersburg, Zürich, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Berlin.

Auguste Renoir (1841 - 1919) is, without doubt, the best loved of the so-called impressionists. For more than a hundred years now, his works have generated something of a euphoric response. Renoir was also greatly admired by contemporary artist friends. Their reference was perhaps best summed up by Cézanne in 1902, who is reputed to have said: "I despise all living artists, with two exceptions - Monet and Renoir..." On another occasion Cézanne said of Renoir: "His genius causes him to be demanding in his methods." Even artists such as Matisse and Picasso, who were complete opposites in terms of temperament, were united in their praise of Renoir. "His work is that of an artist, gifted with the greatest of talents; and he has been grateful enough to respect his gifts," wrote Matisse in 1918 in homage to Renoir, a year before the latter's death.
Renoir had a unique love for life and knew how to transmit his passion into his paintings. His works include enchanting still lifes of flowers and fruit; light-flooded landscapes; charming portraits capturing the fascinating spontaneity of the moment, sensual acts, and cheerful every-day scenes.
