The Objects of RFIT

The objects of the Foundation shall be to advise the Senate of the University of Sydney and the Vice-Chancellor on matters associated with research in information technology in the Basser Department of Computer Science within the University of Sydney, and without restricting the generality of the foregoing, in particular to promote, develop and assist research in information technology in the Basser Department of Computer Science generally, and especially to:

  1. foster good communications between industry and commerce and the Basser Department of Computer Science;
  2. advise on courses of instruction in information technology;
  3. encourage both undergraduate and postgraduate students of high quality to work in the Department;
  4. facilitate the development of research in information technology with particular reference to industry-oriented projects; and
  5. conduct joint projects and investigations in conjunction with industry, commerce, Government and other community interests.
The objects may be achieved by:

  1. admitting to membership of the Foundation, persons, firms, companies and associations, whether incorporated or unincorporated, upon such terms and with such privileges, as may be determined from time to time;
  2. in collaboration with the Basser Computing Association in the University of Sydney, developing closer relations with past students and graduates of the Department and with the computing profession in general and fostering among them a sense of involvement in the Department's activities;
  3. sponsoring the printing of research results and the issue thereof to Members of the Foundation and others;
  4. promoting direct interaction between the Department and industry on academic matters, staff exchange, project development and technology transfer;
  5. encouraging the use of available skills and experience on hand to advise local technology;
  6. recommending grants to the Department in support of research and teaching, for the purchase of plant, equipment and materials, for fellowships and salaries for the provision of scholarships from funds obtained by the Foundation by way of fees, donations and the like;
  7. soliciting from members of the public donations, gifts and bequests to the University of Sydney to foster the objectives of the Foundation;
  8. assisting in arranging visits of experts in information technology from local industry and overseas;
  9. entering into any arrangement with any institution or association having objects similar to those of the Foundation;
  10. assisting the University to acquire and turn to account patents, patents rights or inventions, copyright designs, trademarks or secret processes;
  11. arranging for lectures, exhibitions and demonstrations; and
  12. doing all such things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the above objects or any of them.
