Data Communication and Network Services (DCNS) has developed a dataset of basic information about members of the UC Berkeley community called the Community Profile Dataset (CPD). This dataset serves as a universally available, online source of "white pages" directory information about all faculty, staff, and registered students.
This project originated with the Human Name Service Task Force, which in September 1993 reported to Vice Provost Jack McCredie, "The campus urgently needs an easy-to-use, comprehensive, up-to-date, automated Human Name Service (HNS) so that faculty, staff, and students can access essential directory information about all members of the campus community. . . . A critical element of this vision goes beyond the scope of a name service: we describe the creation of a single authoritative dataset of basic information about members of the campus community. This Community Profile . . . would be the foundation of a human name service as well as many other services essential to the campus's long-term vision for computing."
The proposed benefits of the CPD are the following:
The intent of these services are to list a single primary electronic mail address for an individual. Forwarding electronic mail to other accounts is the responsibility of the individual.
Electronic mail addresses have been collected from several different sources, including the UCLink machines, the faculty and staff telephone book, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS), and loaded into the CPD. However, many individuals in the CPD still do not have electronic mail addresses.
If you have electronic mail address corrections, or if you would like to have your electronic mail address entered into the CPD, follow the instructions on the Email Update Form (UC Berkeley Only) or those given in response to the command "finger help@berkeley.edu".
If you are the system administrator of a machine with electronic mail addresses and can provide data about your users to us in machine-readable form to add to the CPD, please send electronic mail to dcns@violet.berkeley.edu.
