Unix System Administrator / Oracle Database Administrator - Grade 10

The Department of Computing Science is looking for a recent Computing Science graduate, with one or two years of experience, to fill a systems analyst (Grade 10) position. Applicants are expected to be fluent in the Unix operating system, show initiative in projects associated with the undergraduate laboratory systems, and (preferably) have some experience with Unix systems administration. It is highly desirable that the applicant has experience with the Oracle database system, most preferably at the systems administration level. Experience in systems administration in DOS/Windows environments would be an additional asset.

A combination of part-time candidates may be considered.

Major Activities:

A. Unix systems administration for undergraduate computing laboratories

The analyst will be responsible for administering and supporting a number of undergraduate Unix computing laboratories. Routine duties will include monitoring student resource and network usage, maintaining IDs, setting up tape back-ups, restoring files, analyzing and fixing system problems, and installing system upgrades and application software. Support to other staff in the areas of expertise will be provided as necessary. As part of a group of administrators of the instructional laboratories, the analyst will be expected to be available for stand-by and call-back on a scheduled basis.

B. Oracle database administration

The department uses the Oracle database systems both as the development environment for its undergraduate database courses and as a tool for course management and administration. It would be a decided advantage if the applicant were to be able to take over the role of database administrator. Routine duties would be the installation and maintenance of current versions of the database; administration of user permission levels; trouble shooting; and consultation to staff and graduate students on the use and features of the system.

C. Planning and development

The analyst will participate in enhancement of laboratory and/or departmental environments by the evaluation, installation, and benchmarking of software packages or system changes. Participation in the development of administrative software tools and procedures will also be required.

D. Other duties

The department will be acquiring TCP/IP/Windows based laboratories. Experience in this type of systems administration would be a decided asset.
