About Singapore
Geography
Singapore is located in south-east Asia at the southern tip of the
Malaysian Peninsula, between Malaysia and Indonesia. It has a total
area of 632.6 sq km of which 622.6 sq km is land. Singapore is an island
with 193 km of coastline. The country is a focal point for south-east
Asian sea routes. A map of
Singapore is available.
The climate in Singapore is tropical - hot, humid and rainy with no
pronounced rainy or dry seasons. Thunderstorms occur on 40% of all days
(67% of days in April). The terrain consists of lowland with gently
undulating central plateau. Natural resources include fish and deepwater
ports.
People
Singapore has a population of 2,826,331 (July 1993 est.). Nationals in
Singapore are known as Singaporean(s). The population consists primarily of
76.4% Chinese, 14.9% Malay and 6.4% Indians. There are many religous
groups: Buddhist, Atheist, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Taoist and
Confucianist. The offical languages are Chinese, Malay (also national
language), Tamil and English.
Government
The country is a republic within Commonwealth and is known officially as
Republic of Singapore and in short, Singapore. The capital is Singapore.
Independence was gained on 9 August 1965 from Malaysia.
The Singapore flag consists of two
equal horizontal bands of red (top) and white; near the hoist side of the
red band, there is a vertical, white crescent (closed portion is toward
the hoist side) partially enclosing five white five-pointed stars arranged
in a circle.
Economy
Singapore has an open entrepreneurial economy with strong service and
manufacturing sectors and excellent international trading links derived
from its entrepot history. The economy appears to have pulled off a soft
landing from the 9% growth rate of the late 1980s, registering higher
than expected growth in 1992 while stemming inflation. Economic activity
slowed early in 1992, primarily as a result of slackened demand in
Singapore's export markets. But after bottoming out in the second
quarter, the economy picked up in line with a gradual recovery in the
United States. The year's best performers were the construction and
financial services industries and manufacturers of computer-related
components. Rising labor costs continue to be a threat to Singapore's
competitiveness, but there are indications that productivity is catching
up. Government surpluses and the rate of gross national savings remain
high. In technology, per capita output, and labor discipline, Singapore
is well on its way toward its goal of becoming a developed country.
Communications
Singapore has of 38 km of railroads and 2,644 km of highways. There are a
few ports around the island. There are 6 airports.
There are good domestic telecommunication facilities and good
international service. Radio and television broadcast coverage is good.
