in GEORGIA (Miramax) Mare Winningham plays the title role in GEORGIA, portraying a successful folk rock singer who is driven to the edge by the behavior of her younger less-talented sister. By all accounts, Winningham is an actress of exceptional lucidity and emotional truth. Until recently, she has been best known as a major American television star, winning an Emmy Award for "Amber Waves" and an Emmy nomination for "Love Is Never Silent. Her cinematic quotient is, however, on the rise. In 1994, she played two very different back-to-back roles as Kevin Costner's inamorata in Wyatt Earp and The War. Her first role in a major motion picture was opposite Paul Simon in One Trick Pony. She has since then appeared in more than a dozen films including St. Elmo's Fire, Shy People, Made in Heaven, Threshold, Turner & Hooch, Miracle Mile and Hard Promises. Born in Arizona, Winningham grew up in Southern California's San Fernando Valley. While in her teens, she studied acting during three summers at a special workshop sponsored by California State University - Northridge. During the academic year, she performed in school productions. In her senior year, she was spotted by an agent who facilitated her landing a starring role in the television movie Special Olympics. Since then, her telefilm and mini-series credits have included Off The Minnesota Strip, The Thorn Birds, Helen Keller, The Miracle Continues and God Bless The Child. Winningham resides in Northern California with her husband and their five children.
