Emma Thompson stars as "Elinor Dashwood" in SENSE AND SENSIBILITY which she adapted from the Jane Austen novel by the same name. It is her first screenplay.

Her portrayal of Margaret Schlegel in Howards End earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1992. Thompson was also nominated twice in 1993 for both her leading role in The Remains of the Day and her supporting role in In the Name of the Father.

Before graduating from Cambridge University in 1982 with a degree in English Literature, Thompson acted for three years with the Footlights at the Edinburgh Fringe with Cambridge's first all-female revue, Woman's Hour, which she co-wrote, co-produced and co-directed; and in her first solo show, Short Vehicle.

In London's West End, Thompson starred in the hit revival of Me and My Girl and in John Osborne's Look Back in Anger, directed by Dame Judi Dench. For the Renaissance Theatre Company World Tour, she was directed by Kenneth Branagh as the "Fool" in King Lear and as Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Additional film credits include Junior, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, Dead Again and Peter's Friends, all directed by Kenneth Branagh; and Impromptu directed by James Lapine. Most recently, she portrayed the title role in Christopher Hampton's Carrington, which won a Special Jury Prize at the 1995 Cannes Festival.
