in NIXON (Buena Vista) Tony Award winner Joan Allen, who portrays Pat Nixon in NIXON, is one of the New York theater world's most honored actresses and winner of every major prize for her work on and off Broadway. She received the Best Actress Tony Award for her performance in Lanford Wilson's Burn This and was nominated in the same category for her role in The Heidi Chronicles. Off Broadway she starred in The Marriage of Bette & Boo (for which she won the Obie Award), and reprised her Steppenwolf Theatre/Joseph Jefferson Award-winning role in And A Nightingale Sang for which she received the Clarence Derwent Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and a Theatre World Award. Born in Rochelle, Illinois, Allen was a theatre major at Eastern Illinois University and Northern Illinois University. It was while she was attending EIU that she became involved with Steppenwolf. She went on to appear in numerous feature films including Compromising Positions, Peggy Sue Got Married, Manhunter and Searching for Bobby Fischer. In addition to theatre and films, Allen starred on television in the HBO movie Without Warning: The James Brady Story, The Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation All My Sons, the NBC miniseries Evergreen and her local Emmy Award nominated performance in the Chicago Public Television production of Say Goodnight, Gracie. Ms. Allen lives in New York with her husband and two year old daughter, Sadie.
