Software from IATH
The Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities derives its specificsoftware projects from the needs of its fellows and their projects: in general, our goal is to produce software that will be broadly useful in the humanities computing world, t
hat runs over the internet in conjunction with the Web, and that addresses problems not likely to be solved by those who develop software for business and entertainment. Until recently, our software efforts were aimed at producing working prototypes, usi
ng Unix as a development tool. With the advent of Java, a programming language that produces applications which can be embedded in and distributed through Web pages, and which run on any type of computer hardware, we ha
ve begun rewriting these prototypes as distributable Java applets.
- Publicly Available Software:
-
- Here's a forms-based demonstration of the current version of Inote, an image annotation tool developed by Sherrie Albrecht. This is an X-windows application that uses the Motif++ library and NCSA's Heirarchical Data
Format. Inote is currently being rewritten in Java.
- Source code (including the necessary HDF and Motif++ libraries) and executables for Sun (SunOS) and RS6000 (AIX 3.2.5) platforms are also available via ftp), and an html version of
the Inote help document is available here.
- Comments on or contributions to the Inote software development project are welcome: contact iath@virginia.edu.
IATH Image Viewer
- During the rewrite of the image annotation tool into Inote, we developed an image display tool (available via ftp) that allows the image and the window frame to be manipulate
d separately, providing a panner when size of the iamge exceeds the frame. It provides no editing functions, and it displays only GIF and TIFF images.
The Image Annotation Tool
- Here's a forms-based demonstration of the first version of an image annotation tool released by the Institute. This version used the Interviews library, and was developed by Shawn Carnell.
-
- Here's an SGML linenumbering program, a Perl script developed by Susan Gants: its purpose is to help users add reference line-numbers that relate one SGML-marked text to another.
-
- Here are two audio utilities for the RS6000, a basic audio driver developed by Dotun Akinola, and Zounds!, a Motif-based audio control panel developed by Pete
Yadlowsky. Both are available via ftp.
- Pre-Release Software:
-
- Here is a forms-based demonstration of the currents state of our newest software project, Babble, under development by Pete Yadlowsky. Babble will be an SGML-aware synoptic text tool that can display multipl
e texts in linkable parallel windows. It will use unicode, a 16-bit character set standard, which will allow multilingual texts, using mixed character sets, to be displayed simultaneously. The tool will allow users to link the texts for scrolling and sear
ching. Babble is currently being rewritten in Java: watch this page for beta versions and further details, as they become available.
