HP CLUSTER AND NETWORK ENVIRONMENT
The campus computing environment is extensive and includes several timesharing systems. The Computation Center administers the campus network.

Our network uses the Unix operating system and an excellent online help facility is available throughthe UNIXhelp project. The Computation Center maintains a Unix Resources page.

The GSLIS IPLAB has many machines individually connected to the campus network. For the most part, each machine is tied directly to the network through a "hub" in a routing closet in the IPLAB. The HP Cluster on which student accounts are maintained, consists of the cluster server "fiat," and the cluster clients, "lexus" and "toyota." These machines are HP workstations.

All GSLIS student email accounts (and Internet access) reside on the cluster. Machines #2, #3, #4, #5, #17, #22, #23, and #24 (DOS) have direct ties to the campus network and rely on client software and ethernet cards to communicate. Machines # 9, #13 and #21 (Macintosh) have a similar configuration. The machine called "volvo" is also an HP workstation and is the home of the department "gopher."

The campus network (UTNet) ties campus computing resources together over a highs peed network link. The GSLIS network connects to UTNet in order to gain access to campus mainframes and to the Internet.

The campus network connects to the Internet through the Texas Higher Education N etwork. THENet ties many Texas education institutions together.

The Texas Higher Education Network (THENet) is linked to the Internet through a high capacity link in Houston. This link is known as an Internet backbone site which provides high-speed/high-bandwidth connectivity to other national networks .
