For an overview of the Internet, what it is, how it developed and so on, visit the AARNet/Internet Demonstration prepared by Deidre Schutz, Network Librarian, Monash University Library.

For some great fun why not try online chatting on our Chatline Page. Here you can talk in real time to other Internet users in a variety of rooms.

The World Wide Web

Harnessing the Power of theWeb is a great starting point for all things to do with the web and if you have any questions send them to Dr Web who will try and respond withintwo days.

If you are using the Netscape browser which is taking the world by storm then please read the Heartwarming Introduction to get you started. For more detailed help and information on Netscape look in the Online Manual and to learn how to use it look at the help pages. You should also check out the Netscape Tutorial. For those of you using Mosaic then look at the page Collected Information Concerning Mosaic and HTML for guides and help on using Mosaic. Also contains information on creating your own web pages using the HTML format. Finally, our shell users who dial in and log onto our SUN machine will use the text based browser called lynx.

Sending and receiving electronic mail

The other main thing you will be doing on the Internet is sending mail. The package we are recommending for this is a shareware one called Eudora written by Jeff Beckley, Jeff Gehlhaar and Mark Ericson. Look here for help on using Eudora or download the Eudora Manual (Mac and PC), print it out and keep it handy for reference. General help on using email can be found here. Our shell users who log directly onto the SUN will be using a mail package called Pine. All pine users should go directly to the Pine Information Centre run by the programmers of the package as well as checking out this Pine Tutorial.

Mailing List information can be found on our Newsgroups and Mailing Lists page.

Newsgroups

Check the VICNET Newsgroups and Mailing Lists Page.

With Usenet news we imagine our PPP users will use Netscape as their newsreader. I find it an easy to use way of viewing and participating in newsgroups. Information on how to access newsgroups from Netscape can be found here. For our shell account users we hope to load Tin as the newsreader for them to use. This is not there yet but we hope it will be soon. Look here for help on using Tin. Note: the UNIX prompt for our shell account users will be different to what is displayed here but everything else should be similar. Eventually we aim to hide the UNIX prompt from you and have you get into Pine, Lynx, Tin and so on via a menu interface. Watch for this!!

New user should visit Information for new Usenet readers. Here you will find pointers to all the most important sources of information about Usenet news, including the newsgroups news.newusers.questions where newusers post questions about anything to do with the Internet, (I use this groupa lot and you get fabulous answers back - try it), and news.announce.newgroups where discussions and voting on new globalnewsgroups takes place, (if you would like to create a new global newsgroup check here for how it is done).

Two Usenet tutorials all users should look at:

Things of particular interest to shell account users

Unix users, including our shell account users who will be faced with the mysteries of Unix, should check out Unix help for Users and Unix tutorials. Both these provide help on all aspects of using Unix. You should especially check out the tutorials one to find out about FTP, the PICO editor and so on. You may find yourself using these at some time. Some related help can be found on Perl along with some miscellaneous stuff, including information on GNU software (follow the Cygnus link). Here are some tutorials for you to try out:

Our shell account users should also check out the Chebucto Freenet's Help Desk in Canada. This is brilliant stuff and will help our shell users tremendously

Modems

One of the things all users will come up against in using VICNET, or any other online service, is a modem. This is the vital piece of equipment which allows you to connect to VICNET down a normal phone line. Unfortunately modems can be the cause of much hair pulling and frustration. Below we list some of the major sites on the web dealing with modems. Visit these first if you are having problems with your modem. We also have some links off to the relevant newsgroups concerned with modems. Posting your problems and questions on these should result in a lot of help from the Internet community. And of course
VICNET support is always here to help.

The first place you should look for help is the VICNET Tips and Tricks Page especially VICNET Help Sheet 5: Modems and Initialisation Strings

Supra Modems - the ones which come with the VICNET software and modem packs. If you have any questions about these modems or the VICNET software packs email support at FOSH Australia

Good places to look for help include:

Newsgroups

Finally a good ftp site to check out for discussions, reviews, comparative statistics, program source code and much more for and about modems is ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/misc/modems.

Help for users who want to prepare their own Web Pages

If you want to publish information on VICNET use The HotDog Web Editor to create your pages and ws_ftp to upload your files onto the VICNET server. Of course you must first arrange all this with our editor. Mac Users should check out our Mac Page. Our two senior editors are both Mac users so they will be able to help you with any problems.

To aid our users in preparing web pages we have put together some HTML software packs for both our Windows and Macintosh users. Windows users can now use Netscape offline to view their web pages by using a dummy winsock.dll file. Head over to Best WWW sites for examples of well designed homepages.

For a full list of all the html editors out there for PC, Mac and Unix platforms check out Gabriel's HTML Editor List.

When you have created your web page you can check its syntax at the HTML Validation Service and then alert the world to its existence by using the Submit-It service.

Here are some links to good online help and tutorials on HTML...

Want to grab some public domain images check out these sites:

This help and information should give you enough to be going on with. If you require any further help on creating HTML pages or would simply like to discuss putting your own information on VICNET, then please contact the VICNET editorial team (03) 9669 9710. They can also provide you with a HTML starters kit for either Macs or PCs.
