If you are using the Netscape browser which is taking the world by storm then please read the Heartwarming Introduction to get you started. For more detailed help and information on Netscape look in the Online Manual and to learn how to use it look at the help pages. You should also check out the Netscape Tutorial. For those of you using Mosaic then look at the page Collected Information Concerning Mosaic and HTML for guides and help on using Mosaic. Also contains information on creating your own web pages using the HTML format. Finally, our shell users who dial in and log onto our SUN machine will use the text based browser called lynx.
Mailing List information can be found on our Newsgroups and Mailing Lists page.
With Usenet news we imagine our PPP users will use Netscape as their newsreader. I find it an easy to use way of viewing and participating in newsgroups. Information on how to access newsgroups from Netscape can be found here. For our shell account users we hope to load Tin as the newsreader for them to use. This is not there yet but we hope it will be soon. Look here for help on using Tin. Note: the UNIX prompt for our shell account users will be different to what is displayed here but everything else should be similar. Eventually we aim to hide the UNIX prompt from you and have you get into Pine, Lynx, Tin and so on via a menu interface. Watch for this!!
New user should visit Information for new Usenet readers. Here you will find pointers to all the most important sources of information about Usenet news, including the newsgroups news.newusers.questions where newusers post questions about anything to do with the Internet, (I use this groupa lot and you get fabulous answers back - try it), and news.announce.newgroups where discussions and voting on new globalnewsgroups takes place, (if you would like to create a new global newsgroup check here for how it is done).
Two Usenet tutorials all users should look at:
Our shell account users should also check out the Chebucto Freenet's Help Desk in Canada. This is brilliant stuff and will help our shell users tremendously
The first place you should look for help is the VICNET Tips and Tricks Page especially VICNET Help Sheet 5: Modems and Initialisation Strings
Supra Modems - the ones which come with the VICNET software and modem packs. If you have any questions about these modems or the VICNET software packs email support at FOSH Australia
Good places to look for help include:
Finally a good ftp site to check out for discussions, reviews, comparative statistics, program source code and much more for and about modems is ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/misc/modems.
