ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a service being made available by your telephone carrier which uses digital technology to support voice and data communications. ISDN data transmissions are far superior in performance to those using conventional modem technology.
The standard for delivery of this service is called a Basic Rate Interface (BRI) connection. Each BRI contains two data channels ("B channels"), each of which offer 56 kilobits per second (kbps) accessible bandwidth from your LAN or PC to the Internet.
ISDN transmissions are typically made from your machine to the Internet through hardware that serves as a TCP/IP router and ISDN modem in one unit. This fully digital path eliminates the performance disadvantages associated with converting information into a voice signal for transfer through a conventional modem. Therefore, ISDN transfers are optimal for interactive use.
If ISDN/Microlink(tm) services are not available in your area, Centrex-Data lines may be used.
ISDN/Ethernet routers which include an NT1 adapter are available directly from UUNET. If you wish to use your ISDN line for both voice and data, you will need to obtain the NT1 adapter available from your telephone company. When setting up service with us, please inform us that you will be using your line for both types of transfer.
If you plan to purchase an ISDN/Ethernet router for use with our service it must be capable of making a completely synchronous PPP connection over an ISDN line using CHAP (the Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol).
