Government Wins Internet Award
News Release - Issued by the Cabinet Office Ref 258/95 dated 5/10/95
CCTA, the Government Centre for Information Systems, has won the 'Internet
Users of the Year Award'. The award was presented by 'Computing' magazine
for CCTA's Government Information Service, an On-Line service giving access
to government information via the Internet.
John Horam, Minister for Public Service, said:
"I am delighted that
'Computing' has recognised CCTA's achievement in providing this service. The
Government Centre for Information Systems deserves credit for opening up the
Information Superhighway and providing information to people electronically.
Increasingly, organisations and individuals are able to access government
information around the clock. This award demonstrates the Government's
commitment to using leading edge technology to improve service to the public."
The service currently provides information from 115 organisations and 60
government departments and agencies, including ministerial speeches, press
notices and statistical data. 'Surfers' on the Internet can use the
government service to access information on a wide range of subjects.
Pictures of the Metropolitan Police Art and Antiques Squad's top ten stolen
items of the month, minutes of the Chancellor's monthly meetings with the
Governor of the Bank of England and OFSTED's inspection reports are all
available.
The service has been accessed around 120,000 times a week. A key objective
of the service is to provide users with a single point of entry to public
sector information using simple search techniques.
Roy Dibble, Director of CCTA, said,
"At CCTA, we have been looking at what benefits the Information
Superhighway can bring to the running of Government and public services. The
Government Information Service has been extremely well received - it has
been accessed over 3 million times since it was set up last November.
He added:
"We have also provided on-line discussion groups on the Internet
issues ranging from ethics and education to Europe and legal issues."
