History and Overview

Gunma University was established on May 31, 1949 under the National School Establishment Law. Several institutions in Gunma were integrated to form the university: these included the Gunma Normal School, Gunma Youth Normal School, Maebashi Medical College, Maebashi College of Medical Science and Kiryu Technical College.

At its start, the university consisted of three faculties (the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the School of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering), but now it consists of the following organizations:

Most organizations are located on the following three campuses: the Aramaki campus (260,000m2) and the Showa campus (160,000m2) in Maebashi City, and the Kiryu campus (110,000m2) in Kiryu City. The total area of the university, including the Kusatsu Branch of the University Hospital and the In-Service Training Institute at Kita-Karuizawa, is 640,000m2.
