HP Announces HP PerfView And HP MeasureWare Now Manage SAP R/3 Resources

Palo Alto, California. February 20, 1996

Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the integration of its industry-leading resource- and performance-management solutions -- HP PerfView and HP MeasureWare -- with SAP R/3 business software. As a result, users now will receive a complementary and consolidated view of SAP R/3 performance information and overall system-resource characteristics from one central management console.

HP and SAP AG, which is based in Waldorf, Germany, have integrated R/3 business-transaction performance data with PerfView and MeasureWare, allowing users to collect and import data through an HP technology bridge.

This capability gives users central control of the entire IT infrastructure, combining performance data of the R/3 application with performance data of the operating system, the database and the network. Furthermore, it integrates R/3 performance events into other tools from the HP OpenView Solution Framework, such as HP OpenView IT/Operations and HP OpenView Network Node Manager. This integration complements SAP's Computer Center Management System (CCMS), which provides more detailed reporting on R/3 performance behavior.

"The integration of business information from SAP R/3 and HP's resource- and performance-management solutions will simplify the management of distributed environments," said Mark G. Solle, general manager of HP's Software Services and Technology Division. "HP's network- and system-management expertise, combined with SAP's application strengths create an information environment that is unmatched by any other open-systems vendor."

"This integration is an extension of the long-standing and successful research-and-development cooperation that SAP has with HP," said Dr. Uwe Hommel, director of Early Watch Services and CCMS Development at SAP. "With this integration, customers can now manage their R/3 resources as well as their underlying network- and systems-management infrastructure."

About HP MeasureWare Agent Software

HP MeasureWare collects comprehensive performance data on system activity across multiple platforms. Using Data Source Integration (DSI) technology, the agent also can receive data from other IT resources such as applications, networks and databases.

For SAP R/3 applications, the MeasureWare agent uses DSI features to receive data from SAP R/3's HP 9000 shared-memory segment residing on R/3 servers. The R/3 data, as well as the standard collected data, is then continuously summarized, time-stamped and logged into a MeasureWare file-set on the monitored system. In addition, MeasureWare variables are analyzed to check potential alarm conditions while data is being collected and summarized for later use by analysis products such as PerfView.

"The integration of SAP application metrics into PerfView/MeasureWare helps me correlate SAP application response time with the overall systems behavior, allowing me to identify the cause of performance variations with the SAP dialog response time," said Klaus Behrens, system administrator of RWE-DEA AG at Mineraloil and Chemical, a company based in Hamburg, Germany. "This saves me a lot of time in managing the complexity of the distributed environment supporting R/3."

About HP PerfView

HP PerfView uses a Motif -based user interface to provide graphical and numerical analysis of resource-utilization information collected by MeasureWare agents. Available on HP 9000 servers and workstations, PerfView software comprises three modules that allow users to purchase and tailor each solution to meet their individual resource- and performance-management monitoring and analysis requirements:

About SAP CCMS

SAP CCMS specifically manages the SAP R/3 application environment. Application-specific status and alarm management is presented to the operator, together with key parameters of elements in the underlying network and systems that are dedicated to R/3.

About SAP

SAP provides flexible, integrated client/server and mainframe-based business application software that is compatible with most popular hardware, software and database platforms. More than 4,600 companies in over 50 countries use SAP software to manage complex financial, manufacturing, sales, and human resources requirements with SAP's standard systems, R/2 for mainframes and R/3 for client/server platforms.
