UniForum Presents Jim Bell With 1996 Achievement Award

San Francisco, California. February 14, 1996

Prior to the opening keynote address at the UniForum '96 Conference and Exposition, James R. Bell was honored with the 1996 UniForum Achievement Award. Bell received the prestigious award for his outstanding contributions to the UNIX system and open-systems computing movement.

Richard H. Jaross, executive director of UniForum and Lewis E. Platt, Hewlett-Packard Company's chairman, president and chief executive officer, presented the award to Bell on behalf of the worldwide community of information technology users and vendors. Platt delivered the opening keynote address following the presentation.

"Jim has been a key strategist and driving force behind the consolidation of the UNIX system industry," said Jaross, referring to the consolidation of the Open Software Foundation (OSF) and the X/Open organizations into Open Group announced earlier today. "Jim has been on loan from HP serving as president and chief executive officer of OSF and has done a superb job. He is a consensus builder. He is able to sit in a room, listen to everyone and then bring the divergent interests together."

During Bell's 35-year tenure in the computer industry, he worked for Bell Labs, IBM, SRI International, Control Data Corp., Digital Equipment Corp. and HP. In 1968, Bell was one of the first dozen people in the country to earn a doctorate in computer sciences from Stanford University, and he spent 12 years at Digital prior to joining HP in 1980. During the past 15 years with HP, he led engineering, operating systems and language, and technical systems research and development.

He was the first president and chief executive officer of the Precision RISC Organization and the director of the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making. HP served as chairman of the board for X/Open for four years and continues as a board member for the organization. He is the past president of the UniForum Association and a current board member. He has published numerous technical articles, co-authored Mini-Computer Software and serves on the editorial board of UNIX Review Magazine.

"Jim is a master collaborator," said Platt. "For over 30 years, Jim has helped move the computer industry forward. Additionally, Jim is a key factor in the success of HP's open computing and UNIX system leadership." After his assignment at OSF, Bell will return to HP to resume his duties as the director of corporate alliances.
