Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that it is offering a series of PIN diodes in single, series pair, common anode and common-cathode pair configurations in the low-cost, industry-standard SOT-23 surface-mount package. These diodes and diode pairs are designed for use as attenuators and RF switches in low-cost portable wireless products, such as cellular and cordless phones and pagers.
The HSMP-386X series of PIN diodes features exceptionally low current operation to help reduce power consumption in battery-operated portable equipment. Typical attenuation ranges from 1,000 ohms at 10 microamps (mA) to approximately 2 ohms at 10mA. Forward voltage requirements are less than 1 volt for 10mA current. A typical four-diode pi-section attenuator using two HSMP-3864 common cathode diodes requires only 3.5mA of bias current to produce 9dB of attenuation.
They are also one of the lowest-cost PIN diode products suitable for RF switching in wireless equipment. HP estimates that a manufacturer can replace a circuit using a GaAs IC attenuator costing about $2.50 in production quantities with a circuit costing only 80 cents when using these low-cost PIN diodes. An important bonus is that these diodes feature low failure-in-time rates.
The HSMP-386X series of PIN diodes is available in bulk or in lots of 3,000 supplied on standard 8-mm tape.
